Sounds better?

So if the option is exercised it's 36.25 total, 20.05 salary, 16.2 bonuses, 5 years.
11 mil guaranteed unless injured.

Not exercised = 30.125 total, 18.7 salary, 11.425 bonuses, 4 years.
11 mil guaranteed unless injured.

Right?

if this is true then a) Stevie should fire his agent and b) the Bills better do something in FA because they have tons of money.

If there is any truth to the V Jackson rumor, this certainly explains how they could afford it.

Steve screwed himself with those drops and added penalties from over celebrating the end zones. I think he would have made more money if the Bills were not worried about his stupidity and not learning from past mistakes. He will be the #2 receiver once the Bills sign V. Jackson.

That 2013 4.5 mil bonus/fifth year is the 'maturity' clause.

"You pull that **** again, and we'll cut your ass and it isn't going to hurt very much to do it."

He keeps his nose clean this season and the guaranteed portion basically jumps to just shy of 16mil before next season starts.

Johnson got really unlucky with the year he hit free agency. There were way, way too many great receivers out there for him to get a blockbuster deal.

I don't think it is out of whack.

He collects $11.1M in cash this year.

After this year, the Bills have one of 3 choices

1) Cut him - He keeps the $11.1M this year and is a free agent. He'd have to commit a crime for this to happen. The Bills would take a $6.8M cap hit.

2) Pick up the option - He gets the $4.5M option bonus. He will likely see at least 3 years of the contract and be paid $24.1M during that time, for a $8M per average.

3) Do not pick up the option - His salary jumps to a little over $7M, so he actually collects a little more up front, and his 3 year average jumps to $8.9M. There would be less allocated money, so the Bills could drop him easier.

$8M per on a 3-year average is about right for Johnson. Not a bad deal for either side. Picking up the option is the most-likely scenario.

OK, thanks for putting it into terms that are a bit more understandable than the article linked above. After understanding it, it isn't a bad deal for Stevie, or the Bills.

I agree. TY Icky. Awesome deal for both sides

what is the cap hit?

$4.3M this year. Very reasonable.

The way this contract is structured, the most likely scenario is picking up the option. If that is done, then the last couple years of the deal will be higher cap numbers because of the bonus amortization and higher salaries. Johnson will still be young enough at that point that an extension would make sense, assuming he is still producing at a high level.

Good contract for both sides, IMO.

Nice, also cap will increase (most likely) so the hit being higher might not represent the real value of the market.

Good deal and thanks for info

This has to be one of the best deals in Bills history. Both sides made out well. WTF is going on?
