When do teams HAVE to be under the cap, and....

When do teams HAVE to be under the cap, and does anyone have a website that keeps up to date team salary cap numbers..

the ones I've been using are not updated very often

There are still a solid amount of teams that need to purge salary which should mean a few choice names added to the FA pool

use google and search.......they are out there. I just do not have the time or connections to maintain a salary cap page right now. But my numbers were 95+% accurate when I was able to do devote the time

If you follow Andrew Brandt (adbrandt) on twitter, he talks about cap stuff quite a bit. I've heard him mention 3/13 very often as the date when teams need to be under the cap.

Or if you don't have twitter (like me), then just use google reader to follow him.

It was midnight in past years, but it is now when the league office closes. That is 4 PM EST on March 13th this year. That is when teams need to be under the cap, and it is also the start of free agency.

Keep in mind the offseason rule for the cap is a little different. To calculate the cap, only the Top-51 highest base salaries, and all non-base salary compensation count toward the cap. There really aren't any teams, other than Oakland, that have a real issue getting under the cap this year. Really, there is a lot of cap flexibility now because so many teams were hesitant to do new deals before the new CBA was agreed upon. Because of that, most teams have a lot of cap room and there are not many teams with cap issues right now.

I've googled 2012 NFL salary cap numbers but I haven't found a website that is really up to date

Just thought someone here might have a better link to share

I think everyone is really just waiting for the NFL to give the final cap number for 2012

According to PFT, the number has not been set yet:

                              LINK

“We’re still working out cap details with the union,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said via email Saturday morning. “The teams will receive the numbers as soon as everything is completed.”

Though no one is commenting on the details, multiple sources have informed PFT over the past week that an effort has been undertaken to increase the cap number. Under the new CBA, total player salary and benefits come from a total pot. Benefit costs came in higher than expected, which drove down the money available for the cap.
