    Steve Johnson rookie contract question

I think he signed a 4 year contract when he was drafted by the Bills. However, he was waived and signed to the practice squad. I assume that means his rookie deal was null and void at that point? Then he signs a different contract when he is put back on the active roster? Or does his original rookie deal kick back in? If anyone knows how this works I am just curious.

He never went on the PS. He was a gameday inactive

OK, I thought he was on the PS at one point. In any event, lets say a guy signs a 4 year deal as a 7th rounder and gets cut and signed to the PS. Is his rookie deal null and void at that point? So if he is signed to the active roster at some point, it is a new deal?

I am pretty sure it is a new deal.

Yes, in that scenario it would be a new deal.

If another team claimed him on waivers they would inherit the contract, but once he clears waivers the original contract is void.

He then would be signed to the PS. He is technically a free agent and can sign with anyone. Players on the PS are not contracted to the team. If he were added to the active roster of any team at that point there would have to be a new contract signed.

$5,700 per week. That is $96,900 if they are on it the full 17 weeks.

Teams can pay more to PS players. The Pats do this often, paying up to the NFL minimum.

PS players are FA and can sign a contract with any team at any time. If another team wants to sign them the team that is hosting them can't stop them, although most PS players will stay if that team also activates them.

Does anyone know if guys that get cut in the training camp or preseason get any sort of pay?

When players show up for offseason workouts they get a per-diem payment. In 2010, it was $130 per day for up to 56 days for a max of $7,280. In 2011, that was $145 per day for up to 56 workouts (over 14 weeks), so they could get up to $8,120 (of course, the lockout wiped that out). Those are paid to all players separate from any workout bonus they negotiated in their contracts. I am not sure what the per-diem is for 2012, but the program has been scaled back to something like 10 weeks.

In training camp they get paid a weekly amount, which in 2010 was $825 for rookies and $1,225 for veterans. They get that up until the week before the season starts. I am not sure what the amounts are for 2012.
