All: The new Billszone site with the updated software is scheduled to be turned on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The company that built it, Dynascale, estimates a FOUR HOUR shut down, from 8pm Pacific, (5pm Eastern) while they get it up and running. Nobody will be able to post in any forum until they are done. Afterwards, you may need to do a web search for the site, as old links will not work, because the site is getting a new IP address. Please be patient. If there are bugs, we will tackle them one at a time. Remember the goal is to be up and running with no glitches by camp. Doing this now assures us of that, because it gives us all summer to get our ducks in a row. Thank you!
I bet this was done to save cap room. Sanchez had hit escalators in his contract, so his salary for this season was $8.5M along with a $2.75M roster bonus. The Jets likely converted that to bonus and tacked on the extra years to spread it out for cap purposes. That would create about $8M in cap room for this year.
Depending on what guarantees he got in the future, or additional bonus on top of what he was to receive, it doesn't mean they committed to him beyond this season any more than before.
Rex being Rex, Pursuing Peyton and failing, extending Sanchez, Trying to trade a horrible tackle after publicly supporting him, slapping 1st rd tender on Maybin.....embarrassing. Did I miss anything?

Ya this isnt a big deal they can probably cut him lose in the future without a problem or if he plays solid already have him signed

It all comes down to how firm his guarantees are. He was going to get paid over $11M this year anyway, so they pay him that much in the form of a bonus and it is just a matter of it being spread out over 5 years for cap purposes. I have heard $20.5M guaranteed, but haven't heard if that guarantee is just for skill. Even if it is, that really only means they committed to him for 2 more years.
How so? By making more cap room this season? Granted Sanchez needs to prove a lot, but this is a smart move by the front office.
My opinion is the Jets may have wanted to get some more cap room like Icky said, but I think the bigger reason was to prop up Sanchez so his confidence did not take a bigger hit with all the Manning talk because the Jets knew there was a snowballs chance in hell Manning would choose to go there anyway.
