Per Drayton Florence.

He must see the money being thrown around and wants in.

Didn't he want to play for the Texans? They might have an opening real soon....

If Schobel can play he would look good with the rest of our DL.

He didn't want to play LB. That's why he left.

Maybe he just knew he wouldn't do well as a LB and thought better to retire than go through having to learn a new position and not be able to do it anyway.

I dont care that he quit. He's been out of a football for a year, he was already not even the same caliber player when he retired, I have zero interest.

He can play 2nd string and come off the bench to get his garbage time sacks. Nobody gets to the QB like Schobel in a game that has already been decided.

this team needs a depth player that is young and could develop behind Mario and stick around for awhile. This draft has some good value for DE's in the later rounds

Yep.
If in shape an upgrade over Kelsey for sure!

do the bills still own his rights? could they trade him for a pick or something to some desperate team?

that'd be fun.

No. He is a free agent.

34. Turns 35 on Sep 1.

Wouldn't the Bills have his rights still, or was he a free agent when he retired?

Bills cut him on August 10, 2010. He did not report to camp because he wanted out. However, he was due a roster bonus and would have to pay it when he showed up. When he threatened to report to camp, the Bills cut him to avoid paying the roster bonus.

He then became a free agent, but decided to retire instead of keep playing. Texans worked him out and wanted to sign him to a contract, but he declined.

well, we currently have nothing as insurance for mario... we need a pure pass rusher in case merriman gets hurt again... that could come from the draft though... as of right now assuming merriman gets hurt again which is a fair assumption and im sure obd is thinking the same thing, the dline looks like this...also assuming edwards and johnson get cut, i see no room for them...

mario / curry-2nd rd
williams/ carrington
dareus/ troup/ heard
kelsay/ moore

i could easily see the bills moving curry to le, and then signing schobel to a 1 year deal. hes only 34, reports are he is in decent shape... never had any serious injuries....

a 3rd down line of

schobel
williams
dareus
williams

that is nuts...

this all depends on how the front office feels about merriman and his medical reports these next 2 months...

im much more confident in schobel than merriman and could easily see aaron getting 10 sacks with mario on the other side... deadly man!

Why wouldn't we want Schobel back if he makes our team better ?? You know he's healed up & if he's in shape, give him a look.

Anything that makes the Bills better, is cool with me. He's going to obviously get to have to take a vet minimum salary with escalators for performance, which probably means we'll owe him $10 M by the end of the season.

we want to develop players who will be here for a long time?

I agree with Justa. If the Bills were coming off a year where they almost made the Superbowl, I'd say go after Schobel. They aren't that team. They are a young, up can coming team. There's no need for Schobel, he's too old, and hasn't played football in a long time.

The real question is how Tim Tebow fits into all of this.

Thurm I don't know but I thought Kelsay when we played a 4-3 was pretty decent last year??

The Pats like to try to resurrect old defensive players, and it seems they always did have a woody for Schoebel. If he's serious, I could see the Pats giving him a look.

we want to develop players who will be here for a long time?

i think the only way this happens is if merriman gets hurt again...

either way we are drafting another edge rusher...

I think the Bills gave him his release so he could sign with the Texans if he wanted to, but he retired instead. Funny the Bills are back to the 4-3 & now the Texans are 3-4.

Schobel never threatened to report to camp. The Bills would have paid him the roster bonus if he did.

Schobel said he did not want to play in Buffalo anymore & would retire if he had to. The Bills gave him his unconditional release so he could sign with the Texans if he wanted to but he decided to retire.
