On Thursday, the Bills put out the word that the team had reached an agreement with Williams, and that there would be a news conference at 1:45 p.m. Print, radio and TV reporters descended on Ralph Wilson Stadium, packing the media room in the fieldhouse. As it turned out, more than two hours elapsed before Williams emerged to speak. Those were two anxiety-filled hours for Bills fans. Why the delay?

Berchtold said the team put out the word about the news conference because they wanted to give the media plenty of time to get in place for the announcement. It turned out that getting the final details done on Williams' mega-contract took longer than expected.

"We look back on it, and from the time [Williams] signed the contract to the time we took him out to the stage was exactly 13 minutes," Berchtold said. "There's no way the media would've gotten there that fast [if they weren't already gathered at the stadium].
