In before some idiot suggests 78.

Kelsay should be thankful for the millions he's been overpaid by this organization and just hand over the number to the new franchise player... with that being said I really don't care.

It's not often a veteran player decides to switch numbers while staying with the same team. When it happens, the player is required to buy up all the unsold jerseys of the old number.

Didn't know that.

Maybe its a good thing he is keeping #90. Its a constant reminder of Kelsays suck over the past 9 seasons.

That's what happened with Ochocinco with his name change as well as Spiller and Leodis when they switched. Luckily for them they didn't get dinged as much as Ocho due to the jerseys switching last year anyway...

Thoughts...Despite his stature as a talented player, Mario Williams just doesn't have the years in here that Kelsay does. Whether we like him or not, Kelsay's decision has to be respected precisely because of the years he's put in with this organization. He's outlasted guys who were considerably more talented than he is here. In my opinion, he's earned #90.

This would be the year to do it with the change from Reebok to Nike. There really shouldn't be many jerseys in reserve.

this whole kelsay thing is such an interesting dynamic

you would think a guy who is a major ambassador for the team, gets paid an average salary to be a starting defensive lineman, and then is one of the teams best defensive players for the last three seasons (when not asked to cover anybody) would be at least appreciated if not loved

and yet somehow he has become the lightning rod for blame for the entire decade of suck - as if its his fault

there is absolutely zero chance kelsay gets cut this season. not that hes a great player, but hes the only defensive end on the team that can play the run downs oppposite williams. anderson cant do it, which is why they will platoon that spot with kelsay. merriman will be lucky if he survives the season just being a rush specialist. none of the other depth players gives kelsays combination of being able to play both the run and the pass. if they had another stud de then maybe they consider not carrying kelsay as a backup but since they dont he will get a lot of plays and with all the attention on the other side he will have his most productive season yet

this is just facts. and yet somehow, someway, lots of brain dead fans actually believe he sucks. its unreal, as if obama is a muslim and we will have death panels killing grandma. how do people get this freakin stupid

Time to get off the couch ladsNot really, it's simply another topic of discussion to help pass time while we wait for TC to get going. There's a lot of time between now and then. I don't know if you realize it, but quite a few of us are already at work when we are on this board. In that case, I think the proper response would be, get back to work.

So long as Mario gets a lot of sacks I don't care what his number is. If Kelsay was cool with giving him 90 fine but if he is not, then Mario has to pick from what is left. It would kind of be a ****head move to try to demand a jersey number IMO.

Why not? A contract is a contract. I don't know, but the way marketing is, I wouldn't be surprised if a player got a cut of the $ action for each piece of apparel with their name on it.

ive never been able to get a definitive number but its between 3.75 and 5 mil, which is average for a starting nfl de. nowhere near 7m for sure

wtf does that have to do with kelsays performance the last three plus season? nuthin thats what. hes never been great, thats known, but hes good, as good as phil hanson was, and not overpaid. its not his fault the team around him sucked ass for a decade. now that theres better players on the team his role will diminish, but he will still be the starting de for most early downs and a key part of the rotation. he is at the peak of his career and should have his best season yet

If Kelsay gets cut, he should blame nobody but himself. It was up to him alone to play better than he has!

Mario can easily pay for whatever left over jerseys there are anyways. He shoud be allowed to ask for 90 solely because he is a Pro Bowl player.

To claim, even jokingly, that Kelsay is in Hansen's league is rather laughable! Remember, he played with Shoebel and stick continued to suck. Aaron was pretty good on his own so you can't say Chris didn't have help on the other side!!!

Before you get your panties in a wad, I expect every player that the Bills draft or sign via FA to play at near Pro Bowl level or I consider them as "sucky".

Mediocrity never wins championships.

Don't understand all the Kelsay hate. The guy was garbage when asked to play OLB in a 3-4 defense. But he's a solid/serviceable DE in a 4-3 and good professional to have for our younger guys. He doesn't want to give up his number to Mario? Big deal. Some of you need to grab a tampon and stop whining.

That would be awesome, but won't happen. Just a few random responses....

I actually wanted Kelsay in the first round when he came out, and was slightly pissed when they took McGahee. The sting was alleviated when he dropped to us in the second, but then I started to wonder why he fell so far.

Kelsay shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Phil Hansen.

Unfortunate for him, but he is the poster boy for the team's mediocrity this century. Not necessarily a bad player, but just not good enough.

I'm not convinced that Kelsay can even play effectively on the right side, and until he proves me wrong RDE is the most glaring weakness on this defense at this point in time.

He will be gone after this season, next at the very most, so regardless of who has the number now Mario will end up with it eventually if he truly wants it. IMO if Kelsay doesn't want to release it (and it's his earned right not to) than hopefully Mario sacks up and chooses a number that gives him just a tiny bit more motivation to make that number 'special' for him and Bills fans.

all i know is i had seasons tix all through the glory days when phil played and my eyes tell me he and kelsay are virtual clones with the major difference being the quality of the units they played on. phil played on some of the best while chris played on some of the worst

after marv admittedly gave him too much money a couple contracts ago he became a marked man in the eyes of the fans. his painfully failed attempt at transitioning to olb just added fuel to the fire so that even after they moved him back to the line some fans just couldnt get that picture out of their head and started blaming him for everything that had gone wrong. even after he essentially gave some of that money back by taking a very team friendly extension the disrespect continued. and most shockingly, even after playing the best ball of his entire career the last three seasons (when not asked to cover anybody), fans still dog him. well nobody said life is fair

just watch him this season. even in platoon duty he is going to look much more effective because hes going to face almost constant single coverage. count how many times you hear 'wow whats happened to kelsay all of a sudden' and remember this poster
