Mario Williams requests move to left DE for Bills

When Mario Williams takes the field for the Buffalo Bills this season he'll do so at his old college position of left defensive end, where the former Houston Texan says he's most comfortable.

Mario Williams has moved around a lot lately. In his final season in Houston, he transformed from a right defensive end to an outside linebacker. Then he left town for the big dollars and quiet life of Buffalo, N.Y.

Now Williams is moving back to a new position for him in the NFL: left defensive end. Dan Pompeii of the National Football Post writes that Williams asked to move back to his old college position, where he says he's more comfortable. Williams played left end at North Carolina State........

It certainly can't hurt to have Williams work on his versatility. Moving him from side-to-side will make it tougher for offenses to keep track of him. The Bills shouldn't hesitate, however, to move him back to the right side if the change doesn't work

    But to play
    that’s the thing
    shut up and deal

I can't see how putting him against Right Tackles instead of Left Tackles wouldn't work. If nothing else, it will force teams to max protect more, and hinder their passing game options.

Does that make Chris Kelsay a RDE? Or is Anderson the starter?

Most likely makes Kelsay the second team LDE or LDE when Mario is at RDE or DT in passing downs.

This was said at the time he signed his contract.

He also played both RDE and LDE in Houston, so this isn't a new position.

Yeah, I was under the impression that he had his best season in Houston playing LDE.

Re: Mario Williams requests move to left DE for Bills

Since Williams' strength is his combination of size, strength, athleticism and speed. This really is the most sensible spot in which he can line up. Williams can give a double team of right tackle and tight end fits. Mark Anderson, Shawn Merriman, and Chris Kelsay are all going to get handled by a double team. Mark Anderson and Shawn Merriman, however, both have the quickness to challenge any left tackle.

I see Kelsay as a depth player with the strength Buffalo has at the end positions. He hasn't been terrible in sack production the last three seasons, and he's a pretty solid run defender. So you can put him in and while he's not going to blow you away, he can stillget some production. Given that he's probably not going to play as much, he should be fresher and perhaps stronger when he does play.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

This was pretty much a given when they signed him.

It was a condition of him signing.

I am against any move that would possibly inhibit the productivity of the QB sacking machine known as Chris Kelsey.

This just shows how in tune some reporters are, "new position." To me it seems that half of his big plays were made from the left side, he has shown versatility throughout the line, which is one of the things that makes him so good. I am just so pumped to see this Defensive line bring havoc on the league.
