Jones favorite to win No. 2 WR spot

WR Donald Jones appears to be the favorite to land the No. 2 job based on comments form coach Chan Gailey this week. Jones had mixed results as the No. 2 WR last year, but said that he gets motivated by public criticism. "Any time you hear things like that it fuels you," Jones said. "I never let anything that anybody says come between me helping this team ... so what everybody says in the outside media doesn't really matter."

WR Donald Jones lined up primarily on the outside opposite Stevie Johnson last year. But Jones said he's spent more time at OTAs in the slot than in previous years -- which could have a ripple effect at the position. "Right now, I'm rotating through three different positions," Jones said. "I like to move around. I like to be able to know every position. The more you can do, the more effective you are."

It's only OTA's. I wouldn't put anything into what Gailey says currently.

yup...Jones being the favorite to win the job is horrible news, but to be fair it's early.

Jones was catch one, drop one last year. Let camp solve the issue of players over pretenders.

He may be the #2 receiver to start the camp but that's about it. He's go to prove that he can get in and out of his routes and hold onto the ball.

Jones was given the opportunity last year and did pretty much nothing in what was, for the first half of the year, a pretty high-octane offense. Every WR on the roster did more than Jones arguably.

Which is why this whole discussion is moot. It's a spread offense. Whoever has the second-best production will be the "No. 2"

when all else fails, fall back on the old Billszone mantra of using the exception to prove the rule.

There are a LOT more WR's that have the dropsies and can't run routes who turn into dismal failures than ones who turn into success stories.

We desperately need a true #2 WR, and we aren't getting it this year.

I think this is a non issue now, but if none of the other receivers can beat him out for the #2 job by the time the regular season starts it would be concerning. Maybe that is because Jones is lights out in preseason but I find that unlikely based on what we have seen from him to date.

Im not saying he is a true number 2. But he did have some great catches and some clutch catches last year in the raiders game. If he can get his case of the drops done he will be a good one.

Other receivers who don't "beat him out" will be on the field most of the time anyway.

It's like wondering who will get the second-most votes in a school board election when there are four seats to fill.
