Chargers pick stable after being shot

HOUSTON (AP) -- San Diego Chargers second-round draft pick Terrence Kiel was in stable condition in a Houston hospital Saturday, one day after being shot during an attempted carjacking.

Kiel, a former safety at Texas A&M, was sitting in his car in a mall parking lot when he was shot in the abdomen and leg by an unidentified man, police said.

The suspect, who was on foot, "said something to the victim and shortly thereafter fired numerous times, striking him in the abdomen and leg," Houston police spokeswoman Sandra Aponte said....

Chargers draft pick out of hospital

07.06.03 - San Diego Chargers second-round draft pick Terrence Kiel was released from a Houston hospital on Sunday, two days after being shot during an attempted carjacking.
General manager A.J. Smith, who spoke with Kiel by phone on Sunday, said there's a chance the rookie could be ready for the start of training camp on July 22.

"It sounds like he's just very lucky," Smith said. "It's a tough situation, but he'll be fine. He'll be as good as new in a couple of weeks. He's just very fortunate."

Bolts see Kiel back in time for camp start

The Chargers expect second-round draft pick Terrence Kiel to be ready for training camp July 23, less than three weeks after he was shot Friday afternoon, apparently in an attempted carjacking.

"From what we understand he's going to be fine in a couple of weeks," general manager A.J. Smith said yesterday after speaking with Kiel and doctors in Houston.

Kiel, 22, was released from Houston's Ben Taub Hospital yesterday....

Kiel feared worst, gets good news

Terrence Kiel lay on the hot asphalt of a Houston mall on Friday, unsure where he had been hit or by how many bullets. He was certain of just one thing.

"I thought I'd never touch a football field again," Kiel said by phone yesterday from his uncle's home in Texas. "It was hurting so bad. I was thinking about my future. The whole time I was laying there, I was only thinking about my family and football."

Kiel, the Chargers' third selection in April's draft, was shot three times, apparently in an attempted carjacking on the Fourth of July as he prepared to leave the Sharpstown Mall. ...

Chargers draft pick to have surgery for gunshot wound

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers second-round draft pick Terrence Kiel, shot during an attempted carjacking this month, will undergo arthroscopic surgery, the team said Tuesday.

Kiel was shot in the calf, knee and stomach July 4 in the parking lot of a Houston mall. He was released from the hospital two days later. Chargers team doctors later discovered he has a fractured bone in his lower left leg and loose fragments in his knee, team spokesman Bill Johnston said.

During surgery Wednesday in San Diego, doctors will remove the fragments, as well as a bullet that was lodged near the surface of Kiel's abdomen, Johnston said. ...

Rookie safety expected to be ready for opener

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers second-round draft pick Terrence Kiel, shot during an attempted carjacking on July 4, had surgery Wednesday to remove a bullet from his abdomen and fragments from his left knee.


The surgery went well, general manager A.J. Smith said. Kiel, who had been the leading contender to start at strong safety, will miss at least the first two exhibition games.
