Potter is going to replace Lindell

I had a conversation today that basically said Potter is going to replace Lindell eventually. Potter hasn't missed a kick from any range & gives us a huge advantage on kickoffs, like almost an assured touchback everytime. We might even be able to take a 15 yard penalty assessed on the kickoff & still get a touchback, however scary that sounds.

I don't know about replacing Lindell. Anyone remember Rayner? He had a huge leg. Potter has to show a lot more for me to even think about replacing Lindell.

Yeah but how does he kick when the wind blows and the snow flies? Lindell is a known commodity at least. We'll see.

Although I completely agree, he did however play at Western Michigan. I'd assume those winds off of Lake Mich. would be kind of like Lake Erie. And I'll finish the same way as you... we'll see.

Just remember the hearing these words, "Booming Kick". That will be mentioned many times during the Bills broadcasts over the coming years.

that's what I think. Potter booming a 75% touch back on kickoffs will reduce the injuries as well as reduce the need for specialty coverage players. SO there is justification for the roster spot

BUT if Potter shines in pre-season that could change, however depending on a rookie for FG's is a slippery slope. i think they let Potter develop for a season before fully handing all K duties over to him

Re: Potter is going to replace Lindell

It takes a while to build up the confidence to be an NFL kicker.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
                      It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

After Potter was drafted, Nix said as much. That is he said they drafted Potter to be a kickoff specialist in the near term while Lindell retains his field goal kicking responsibilities. Eventually they figure Potter would take over that too. The main question in my mind is, what would it take for that to happen sooner rather than later?

I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

Another injury. I know that upper body isn't a HUGE deal for a non-punter other than for balance and comfort, but once injured it's always caution that wins. Also, he is 35...

Even if he does well kicking fg's in pre-season there's no telling how he will do in the buff snow which is why I think next year could be his year.

While I don't think Potter will take over for Lindell this year as far as Field Goals is concerned, I would like to see them give Potter some FG attempts during the preseason. I'd even go as far as to give him all of the PAT's during the Preseason and possibly even some during the regular season. No better way to get him some experience in kicking than to do it duing game situations.

While I like Lindell and again, I think he'll be handling the FG's when the season starts, there's no harm in giving some preseason work to Potter in those areas... Also would help save Lindell's leg for when it counts, to an extent.
