There must be a rip in the ol' time-space continuum. We've arrived at a moment many among us have never known. We're experiencing a summer in which we look toward autumn and see only great things ahead. We're tingling with the foreign sensation of feeling better about the Falcons than about any other team in town.

The Braves are in first place, but they've won too much and disappointed us too often to inspire a groundswell of enthusiasm. The Hawks and Thrashers are being sold and don't really register with the public anyway. The Falcons, who have worked two decades to recapture the sizzle lost when the promise of 1980 turned into the disappointment of 1981, are suddenly sizzling again. They're the ticket everybody wants, the team we mention first. Nobody asks, "How will the Braves do in the playoffs?" (We figure we already know.) Everybody wants to know how good these Falcons can be....
