Could Scott McKillop be the sleeper of Bills camp 2012 ? McKillop has been out of football for 2 years because of a serious knee injury, but is supposedly back fully recovered and having a good camp. A 5th round pick by the 49er's, he led the team in special team tackles in his rookie year and could possibly turn out as a special teams Ace. Right now he is ahead of fan darling Tank Carder on the depth chart for the inside LB spot and has been taking snaps with the 1st unit. I don't think he'll be taking Kelvin Sheppard's spot (at least not right away), but I think his special teams play (plays all 4 units) will land him a spot on the final 53. He has decent size 6'2", 243 lbs. the same as starter Sheppard. Chan Gailey and ST's coach Bruce DeHaven seem really high on him and in his 1st action as a Bill, last weeks preseason opener, he led the team in tackles (might not mean much). We can use all the help we can get at LB and hopefully McKillop will be a nice surprise.

He certainly seems to be on the path. I don't see both McKillop and Carder making the squad, unless Carder starts getting more time on the outside and eventually bumps Morrison from the roster.

He could be another solid FA pick up for Nix. A guy who was making plays, then hampered by injury but is now fully healed

I remember his Pitt days. I'm sure Wanny remembers. I like his instincts, probably better than the White kid the Bills drafted last year. And of course he knows the defense inside out. The only bad thing is he does not have the kind of speed we want, particularly after the injury.

I apologize for the mother remark then, but don't be such an obligatory homer over every scrub we have. He's a slow, plodding, oft-injured, near-talentless player who some Bills fans take a shine to b/c they love their scrappy white guys. He's a camp body and that's all he's good for. I swear to god this 12 year drought has warped people's minds to the point where they don't recognize NFL talent anymore. Can't say I blame them too much though, since there hasn't been an NFL team in Buffalo since 1999.

McKillop is probably better and more deserving of a spot right now than Carder, but draft picks seem to get an automatic spot on the roster. So I just don't know if there's room for both players to make it. Maybe if McKillop really shines they take the chance of putting Carder on the PS.

Barnett and Sheppard are locks. Moats and Morrison appear to be pretty close to locks. Bradham should be a lock as a 4th rounder. They also seem to really like Bryan Scott in his role as a nickle LB. So that's six LB's right there and I don't think there's any chance they keep more than seven.

Morrison's done, the guy is on his last leagues, couldn't even hold a spot on the Jags. I'm not sure why he's here outside of veteran presence, barely played last season when our LB situation was atrocious, still kind of is.

I agree for the most part, but if McKillop and Moats keep improving they may have no choice other than letting Morrison go.

Here's a suggestion for you. Try actually watching him play. He missed a tackle on a short pass (one that most players would have missed) and then responded by making several good plays last night. Responded while the Vikings came directly at him with several plays. He showed speed, strength and instinct. I want to see him play with the first string.

If you continue to fail so badly at seeing and recognizing NFL talent you should just STOP POSTING.

Morrison stinks. He's the Thigpen of the defense. THIS is the guy that is slow. He gets cut. Carder goes to practice squad.

Scott McKillop Turning Heads at Buffalo Bills Camp

For Buffalo Bills (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1284631-buffalo-bills-roster-2012-latest-news-cuts-preseason-predictions) linebacker Scott McKillop (http://bleacherreport.com/scott-mckillop), every rep he takes for his new NFL (http://bleacherreport.com/nfl) team is one step closer toward redemption.

John Murphy of BuffaloBills.com (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-1/McKillop-revamping-a-career/14f0bc0f-1604-4253-af19-56871f631a45) detailed the 26-year-old’s attempt at “revamping a career,” outlining the linebacker’s brief yet challenging time in the league and his journey to Buffalo.

McKillop, who is 6’1” and 243 pounds, entered the NFL in 2009 as a fifth-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1278366-san-francisco-49ers-roster-2012-latest-news-cuts-preseason-predictions). After leading the 49ers (http://bleacherreport.com/san-francisco-49ers) in special-teams tackles his rookie year, per Murphy, the linebacker tore his left ACL and patellar tendon in training camp of 2010.

San Francisco eventually cut him, and since then it’s been a long road back to recovery.

It was an apparent no-brainer, though, when the Bills signed McKillop this offseason as an unrestricted free agent. After all, he had spent his college career at the University of Pittsburgh (http://bleacherreport.com/pittsburgh-steelers) playing under the vision and leadership of then-head coach Dave Wannstedt, who is now the Bills defensive coordinator.

Wannstedt had nothing but great things to say about his former defensive standout back in June when Buffalo reeled him in, per Chris Brown of Buffalo Bills.com (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2012/06/04/mckillops-past-2-yrs-a-trial/):

“He’s an exceptional player,” said the veteran coach.” He graduated in three and a half years so he’s a smart kid. He was a first team All-American. Led the nation in tackles. Tough guy that can play outside or inside. As a rookie he led the 49ers in tackles on special teams.”

After battling for a fair opportunity to compete with the Bills, McKillop has earned his chance. He has done everything right throughout the offseason, contributing in any way possible and striving to improve with every snap. Then, he shined in Buffalo’s 2012 preseason opener, leading the team with six total tackles.

Following his strong offseason with that kind of performance certainly caught the attention of Bills head coach Chan Gailey, who subsequently praised McKillop for his natural instincts and understanding of the game. Per BuffaloBills.com’s John Murphy (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-1/McKillop-revamping-a-career/14f0bc0f-1604-4253-af19-56871f631a45):

“Scott’s done a good job; he’s a good special teams player. He’s making a real run at this football team. He’s got a lot of natural instincts, that’s the great thing about him. He understands the game. He’s got to continue to work on pass coverage, but we’ve got a couple of linebackers in that spot.”

Murphy believes that McKillop’s tenacious efforts and consistent production on special teams are a primary reason he could make the team’s final 53-man roster.
While that may be true, McKillop could contribute to the Bills in more ways than just on special teams.

With no clear backup behind starting middle linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, McKillop is working hard to earn reps on defense. He even saw some first-team snaps recently in training camp, per Murphy’s report.
Currently, McKillop has the edge over rookie Tank Carder behind Sheppard on defense, based on the team’s official depth chart (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/depth-chart-list.html).

If he can stay healthy and continue to impress like he’s capable of, McKillop could turn out to be a steal for the Bills as they continue to revamp their 4-3 defense.

He did nothing but justify everything that was written above against Minnesota. He and Moore need some reps with the first string.

From August 16 Buffalo News:

Moats is working with Kelvin Sheppard and Nick Barnett on the first unit. Bryan Scott might as well be considered a starter, given his role as a nickel linebacker. The second team currently has Scott McKillop playing between Morrison and Nigel Bradham, a fourth-round pick. Who is the best option as the backup to Sheppard in the middle? Morrison and Moats both can play the middle, but McKillop might be best suited for the role. The Bills are expected to keep Bradham and fifth-round pick Tank Carder. Bradham is physical and showed good recognition of plays again in Tuesday's night practice. Carder has good mobility and shows promise in pass coverage.

the more i see this guy play, the more i like. if Shep were to go down, i would feel comfortable having McKillop replacing him.
