    Re: Brad Smith

I think he stays because of his position flexibility plus his special teams contributions.

Meanwhile neither Young nor Pigpen are guys that I feel need to be kept around, either could go and I don't think it would matter which we kept.

You can cut the entire receiving corps outside of Stevie.

This team is largely a pile of **** besides a handful of players.

        Which position flexibility is that?

He's AT LEAST third on the list of kick returners for the Bills as far as I'm concerned.

The guy just ain't no quarterback, no matter what anybody wants to pretend. My definition of quarterback is being able to actually throw the ball. Brad Smith has attempted 8 passes in his entire NFL career, and he'll turn 29 during this season. Gimme a break here, huh? He threw ONE pass as a Bill, and it was intercepted. He has not proven his ability to even be a threat throwing the ball in any way, shape, or form. I'm not a big fan of the Wildcat, but if we feel the need to run it, we should put Freddie and Spiller in the backfield IMO and hike the ball to Freddie. He has thrown a TD pass in the NFL, you know. Everyone knows that Brad Smith is going to run the ball when he's back there, and anybody that thinks he's been converting all these third downs is operating under false information. MOST of his RUNS happen on 1st and 2nd down, both here and in New Jersey.

So what does that leave? WR. Well, we can do much better there. Special Teams? We have PLENTY of talent there.

In this case, "multifaceted" means that the guy can't do anything particularly well.

Yeah, that Nelson character has no business on this team. That rookie, too, who's been doing great but we should displace him. The coaches obviously know less than us when we think Jones is a joke... Yeah let's gut the team aside from that "handful".
          Bye Bye Brady...

Smith makes the team because Gailey likes his toys. This year is going to suck, but at least the Gailey experiment will mercifully be over.
Lehner's history. He just doesn't know it yet.

He's going to stick, IMO. Yes, he is a little bit under-whelming at any and all of the positions he plays, but there isn't another player on the roster that has enough versatility to plug in at several positions (especially ST) if necessary, especially during the heat of a game. Nothing wrong with using a roster spot for a utility guy.

He gives kickoff specialist Potter a roster spot. That's why he sticks.

Emergency QB. Emergency WR. Wildcat QB. Gunner on ST's that made 2 fantastic tackles against the Steelers on punt returns.

He's useful, to say the least.

So who do you keep instead of him?

An actual 3rd QB which means either Pigpen or Young? A ST gunner like Ruvell Martin? A 6th WR like Easley?

What Brad Smith covers is what all 3 of those mediocre guys are all wrapped into one mediocre package. That is why he sticks. Plus as stated above he allows a roster spot for Potter as kickoff specialist.

Yeah, that's great. You know what else will be over if this season is another missed playoffs? The Ralph Wilson Stadium experiment.
