The Jets made the funniest trade ever...

They traded Wayne Hunter, the terrible RT who they would like to cut but can't because he has $2.45M in guaranteed salary this year. He was quite possibly the worst starting OT in the NFL last year, and they brought him back this year thinking he would be better.

So they deal him for Jason Smith, the former #2 overall pick of the Rams who took a huge paycut this year in hopes of sticking but still has $4M in guaranteed salary. The Rams wanted to cut Smith, but the best they could do is trade him for Hunter, who at least has less guaranteed money coming.

Think of it, they have a gaping hole at RT, so they trade for the OT version of Vernon Gholston... and they are going to pay him $4M this year. You can't make this stuff up.

Last year they cut Gholston and picked up Maybin and they look wise for it. It does sound like a lateral move but who knows sometimes a fresh start is all a player needs to prove to be a better player.

Yeah, hard to argue with a trade that gives you a top 3 pick. Sure it costs a bit more than the player you had, but who knows? There is a reason he was drafted that high. At this point in the year its just money, not really going to effect your salary cap goals.

        Side note;
Didn't the Rams pick up Gholston at some point this off-season?
True fans want wins, not draft picks.

Have you seen Smith play? The guy is a trainwreck. The Rams brought in one of the best OL coaches in the NFL over the last 35 yards in Paul Boudreau, and he quickly recognized that Smith was trash.

The Jets traded for the equivalent of Hunter, except he has terrible work ethic, makes $1.5M more guaranteed this year and has a history of concussions. He was a revolving door when he got on the field between head injuries.

I keep hearing how the guy was the #3 pick in the draft, but that ignores him sucking as a pro. Vince Young was the #3 overall pick as well, you know.

The Jets would have been better off cutting Hunter outright and picking somebody up off the waiver wire. That would have saved them $1.5M more. That is why the Rams made the deal, it saved them the money it would have cost them when they cut Smith.

              This about sums it up:

Smith doesn't get mentioned among the biggest draft busts of the last decade because he played on the offensive line in St. Louis. There were no sordid stories about him. He didn't have the pre-draft hype of Robert Gallery. Smith just wasn't particularly good and the Rams knew it. (It's worth noting Gallery enjoyed a much more useful career.)St. Louis essentially tried to replace Smith at left tackle with Rodger Saffold only one year after they took Smith No. 2 overall. If the Jets didn't trade for Smith on Monday, the Rams seemed likely to cut him. He lost his starting job this year to ... Barry Richardson.
Sometimes Hall of Famers slip to the sixth round of the draft. And sometimes guys turn out to be the equivalent of Wayne Hunter after getting taken with the second overall draft pick.

Did I mention the guy makes even more guaranteed money than Hunter? Just a terribly stupid move by the Jets, one that reeks of desperation.

Sounds like a Homer Simpson trade.

Can't wait to blitz the Jets in the opener.

Some people thought a change of scenary would turn Vince Young into a useful NFL player . . .

I saw a little of the Jets' last preseason game, and it looked like Austin Howard had a decent game at right tackle. Even if Smith can't beat out Howard, the Jets may be better off at the RT spot than they were with Hunter a year ago. Hopefully, Mario Williams can give Rex Ryan nightmares no matter who plays right tackle in the first regular season game.

Actually, I was wrong. The Jets are only paying $2.45M of Smith's salary, while the Rams are picking up the rest. Thus, it is just a trade of one bag of crap for another, even up. My bad.
