Davis should help Panthers protect leads

Ask general managers and coaches to identify the veteran that changed teams this offseason and who will have the biggest impact on his new franchise, and the litany of prospects might approximate the number of respondents.

Some will suggest that, under the tutelage of Mike Shanahan, quarterback Jake Plummer will finally reach his potential and will help to end the Denver Broncos' two-year playoff drought. The Buffalo Bills would like to think that linebacker Takeo Spikes will become the centerpiece of their defensive makeover. In Atlanta, there is a sense that wide receiver Peerless Price is the deep threat Michael Vick was lacking, and that the Falcons can now contend with Tampa Bay in the division. There are few better fits, New England officials could convincingly argue, than linebacker Rosevelt Colvin plugged into the team's new 3-4 defensive front.

All legitimate possibilities, to be sure, with each player capable of dramatically improving in 2003 the fortunes of his new employer.

But if the aim is to identify a player who will significantly enhance a team's performance on the win-loss ledger, and who dovetails snugly with the existing design, we have a candidate to offer up for consideration as well.

Of all the veterans on new teams this season, Carolina RB Stephen Davis could have the biggest impact.
