Bruener 'pretty close' to accepting pay cut

Steelers tight end Mark Bruener said he is "getting pretty close" to accepting a pay cut that will guarantee that he arrives at St. Vincent College with his teammates at the start of training camp July 25.
"I plan to be there on the 25th and take part in the run test on the 26th," he said.

Most of the terms of Bruener's new deal, which has not been finalized, were unavailable, but the Steelers were hoping to reduce his scheduled $2,050,000 base salary to about $750,000. That would create salary cap room to sign the team's three unsigned draft choices -- No. 1 Troy Polamalu, No. 2 Alonzo Jackson and No. 5 Brian St. Pierre.

    Bruener accepts pay cut

Steelers tight end Mark Bruener and his agent, Frank Bauer, finalized details Wednesday on a new contract that will reduce his salary this season by more than $1 million.
The Steelers asked Bruener to accept the pay cut to give them salary-cap room to sign their three unsigned draft picks. Before Bruener agreed to the new deal, the team had less than $1 million of cap space.

Bruener was due to earn $2,050,000 this season, but the team offered only about $750,000 -- plus performance incentives -- in its new proposal. It's one of the few times in franchise history that the Steelers have asked a player to accept less than what was contractually owed him.
