Roy prohibited from returning until 2004-05

DENVER -- It's official: Patrick Roy isn't coming back next season.

The Colorado Avalanche confirmed Tuesday that the goalie filed his retirement papers with the NHL, meaning he couldn't come back until the 2004-05 season. He apparently wasn't enticed by the team's signing of free-agent wings Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne last week.

For now, the Avalanche will start training camp with David Aebischer and Philippe Sauve as the top candidates to replace Roy.

General manager Pierre Lacroix has said he will not be looking for a veteran goalie this summer. Dominik Hasek has come out of retirement to return to Detroit, raising the possibility that the Red Wings will try to deal goalie Curtis Joseph
