    NFL Regional Combines

Who's the next American Idol... I mean football player.

It will be interesting to see if anyone makes a roster from this.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The National Football League launched the NFL Regional/Super Regional Combines program in 2012 to serve as a supplement to the League’s National Scouting Combine. They are designed to provide an opportunity for participants to display their pro potential and to help ensure that no worthy player is overlooked.

NFL Regional Combines are conducted specifically for persons eligible for the NFL draft that are not participating in the National Scouting Combine, free agents who have never signed a pro contract, and free agents with some pro experience."

They must make you sign all sorts of waivers to do this. I bet people get hurt and damn near paralyzed and then this will end very fast.

Since there are only 250 or so players who get drafted (7 rounds x 32 teams plus supplemental picks) and almost that many who get invited to the national combine, it really is a long shot for any of these kids who go to the regional combines to make it big time. I'm guessing you could probably count on two hands the number of players who get drafted on the basis of a regional combine performance, and then only a couple actually make a team's final roster. Still, if you don't do you due dilligence, the guy you miss is probably a potential future hall of famer.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

These have been going on for a long time. They were called the ELITE combines until the NFL bought them out last year.

Very few get NFL looks beyond this, but many get looks from CFL and indoor teams. Several of the combines are run by former NFL scouts on a contract basis and they have a few familiar faces helping them. A lot of these scouts now work for CFL teams, so the 2-prong advantage of first hand account and keeping in front of NFL is just as advantageous to them as it is to the players.

I have been given mixed reviews by folks I know. Some were run smoothly and the goal of getting official times was accomplished. Others were disappointed in the cattle call approach that led to them getting very limited reps in the drills.

The misconception is that there are a bunch of NFL people running these, but in the midst of combine and pro-day season common sense will lead you to understand why they are not usually in attendance.

250 guys paying a fee at each event is the most likely reason this exists.
