ALLEN PARK -- Even when he repeats the same lines -- that he has no intention of ending his retirement and returning to the NFL -- running back Barry Sanders' words still fascinate a wide spectrum of sports fans and media.

Sanders reiterated -- again -- his intention to remain retired in an interview Wednesday on ESPN.

Sanders, who retired on the eve of training camp in 1999 after 10 seasons with the Lions, said he misses the competition of playing on Sunday.

"If there is any part I do miss, it is Sundays, playing," Sanders said. "Competition is the part that is a little bit strange not to have. With having 10 years of play, having played in the NFL, I don't go through any withdrawals from not playing."

Here's wishing Barry would make a return
I never fully realized how much I missed Barry Sanders until I was watching him on a rare interview last night on ESPN and it was showing highlights of his footwork mastery, breaking ankles and pulling people to the edge of their seats at the same time.

I could watch hours of just him dancing around tacklers and never get bored. (There aren’t many football players about whom I could watch several hours' worth of highlight reels. Lawrence Taylor would be another one, but I’d definitely want the sound on for him.) Barry’s whirlwind move, the stopping on a dime as defenders stumble by, tripping over themselves, the extreme cutbacks against the grain when a suspect Lions offensive line provided no hole to run through. The energy he seemed to so effortlessly exude....
