All: The new Billszone site with the updated software is scheduled to be turned on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The company that built it, Dynascale, estimates a FOUR HOUR shut down, from 8pm Pacific, (5pm Eastern) while they get it up and running. Nobody will be able to post in any forum until they are done. Afterwards, you may need to do a web search for the site, as old links will not work, because the site is getting a new IP address. Please be patient. If there are bugs, we will tackle them one at a time. Remember the goal is to be up and running with no glitches by camp. Doing this now assures us of that, because it gives us all summer to get our ducks in a row. Thank you!
What does Mel Kiper do for the other 11 months of the year?
What does Mel Kiper do for the other 11 months of the year?
I never hear him anywhere around college football, at the games or on any of the pre/post game shows, never at any senior bowls or pro day workouts, not at combines or anything. Then suddenly he pops up in April and he's a ***** draft expert?
This is why I listen to Mike Mayock a hell of a lot more than Kiper. Mayock is around the game all year long.

He has a radio show a lot on weekends, he is a baseball fan too. Weekend radio show is entertaining when I heard it, it was with Dari Nowkhah. Talks mostly about football, talks pro and college.
Re: What does Mel Kiper do for the other 11 months of the year?
Mel Kiper doesn't even do much of his own scouting.
What ESPN does for him and McShay is get them a solid stable of draft scouts, almost the level that NFL teams have, and those scouts watch all the film, and go to all the pro-days, and do almost all the interviews.
Then they feed him small, bite-sized, easy for media consumption and distribution factoids about each player they consider will be drafted highly or at all. And let him go.
It's why he's always so befuddled when teams draft a projected 7th round player in like the 2nd or something. He doesn't know what to say because he didn't really do much, if any, of the research. Mayock on the other hand, DOES his own scouting and evaluations, granted, since NFLN has started to make him into a bigger personality on the network, and as such have taken away his ability to take as much time as he'd like to watch film and evaluate players, and his rankings have suffered and become slightly more "splash" worthy because of the pressure to do so. He's still lightyears better than the ESPN guys because he actually has his own opinion on pretty much every player.
Re: What does Mel Kiper do for the other 11 months of the year?
Mel Kiper is basically just a superfan who fancies himself a scout. Most of his "info" comes from talking to scouts about their opinions. Its sometimes accurate... usually it's way off. I remember back in the 90's the Bengals used to draft the Mel Kiper draft guide. Without fail, they'd take the highest guy on mel's board. It was actually rather funny to watch. For anyone not a Bengals fan it was anyway...
Of course, we have the 90's Bengals as a historical testament of Mel Kiper's draft "genius"... about the only thing I'll say about him that's good is he's better then Matt Millen.
