It's more likely that they will trade him or just keep him.
What would you pay?

People on this board want to let Levitre, a STARTING guard that would most likely make less money than Smith who is a BACK UP walk. I would not pay anything for Smith myself. I think if no team trades for him he does get cut eventually.

Originally posted by better days View PostYeah, except unlike the Bills, the 49ers are tight up against the cap. Keeping Smith means they can not get another player that could help push them through to a Championship.
It's a more conservative strategy, but it is a realistic one.

If they can't trade Smith, they could ask him to restructure his contract or they could cut him & sign another Vet MUCH CHEAPER.

Re: Alex Smith unlikely to be released
They will keep him and trade him, they'll get something, at least a 3rd out of it.I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Re: Alex Smith unlikely to be released
It's better to keep him and his big salary because that read option stuff really increases the chances of an injured QB. If Kaep goes down they better have a good backup. Plus, think about it, who's going to give up a high pick to trade for Smith? I don't see anyone doing it especially with the contract they will have to eat up. Harbaugh can try to drive the price up by saying they're not going to cut him but I don't think any fish will bite.
