Damn, he actually still had some juice left and looked productive as a change of pace guy for us last season.

Not to mention he was our best "recruiter".

Still, go out on his own terms, I can respect that.

He should have been done a few years ago. At least Buddy Nix was stupid enough to squander around 7 more million dollars on him before he called it quits and headed into retirement.

Lord knows we really miss Cornell Green who we put on IR to acquire Merriman.

I don't remember you ever knowing much about football, but clearly Merriman had another 16-18 plays left in him and you so know it.

Say what you want about his play but grabbing him off waviers was absolutely the right move.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
                  It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

He had a 12 sack season after he got busted for steroids.

His downfall was holding out on getting surgery on his Achilles in order to get his big pay day, then getting high lowed by the titans and his career never recovered from the injuries.

Steroids didn't end his career, buying into his own hype did.

Post of the day. Merriman benefitted tremendously from Buddy's big spending ways.

The 12 sack season was the year after he was busted- you don't lose the effects of roids overnight. Injuries are what happen to guys that juice, you see it in every sport. Merriman was a a fraud. He put on 30 pounds in a matter of months from the end of his college career to the combine. Hard to believe he did that naturally and that combine performance made him millions. If he never juiced Merriman would have been JAG.

Re: Shawne Merriman announces retirement from football

How can some consider Merriman a great move? He gave us 26 tackles and 2 sacks in the 2+ years we kept him laying around on the roster paying him millions of dollars a year for it. Some just look at the name and not the actual production. Some around here even thought he was going to be a difference maker last season too when we brought him back in. This guy was finished a couple years or so before that.

Without the Bills this guy wouldn't never made millions more heading into retirement and would've been lucky to be employed after the 2010 season. Not only did we take on the rest of that salary to have him recover from his current injury we also re-signed him the following season for millions of dollars for the half of season he made it. If that wasn't enough we even brought him back last year after cutting him to start the season.

If this was considered a great move then it doesn't take much to please many fans in Buffalo. All we need to do is sign players that have a name in the league based off past performances whether they can still play or not. Buddy Nix was the best thing to ever happen to Merriman his last few years.

He did nothing for the Bills. Waste of a roster spot.
