The Patriots and free-agent wide receiver Danny Amendola have reportedly reached an agreement "in principle" on a five-year contract, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.

The contract is worth a reported $31 million per Ian Rappaport of NFL Network, including $10 million guaranteed.

That didn't take very long. Literally an hour after the news broke that the Patriots lost Wes Welker to the Denver Broncos, they bring in Welker's replacement, Amendola. Amendola is likely one of the closest receivers to Welker the Patriots could have found, too. Both were undrafted free agents out of Texas Tech, both are better as slot receivers, both are about the same size and they kind of look alike as well.

Amazing how quick the Patriots sign a replacement after losing one of their players... Meanwhile, the Bills have let 2 OL go and haven't replaced either of them.

So the Patriots just got a younger version of Wes Welker, just what I was afraid of. MOFO!

He's not as good as Welker and they are locked into him longer.

Sam Bradford is no Tom Brady but Amendola did quite well with Sam tossing him the ball. Toss in he's familiar with McDaniel's system from their time together in 2011 when Amendola had his best season. Toss in he also worked opposite Brandon Lloyd too in St. Louis. Say what you want but this was a good signing for the Patriots. Notice how many tosses I'm making because that's what we're going to see Brady do just toss or dump it off to Amendola like he did to Welker and it killed us.

So the Pats pissed off Brady and paid a guy who is absolutely not as good as Welker more money than Welker got?

I like it.

Put it this way... I'm way less scared of Amendola.

and no one was scared of Welker when he got traded to the Patriots from the Dolphins. Don't underestimate Amendola as he put up good numbers with Sam Bradford, who inspite of being a 1st overall draft pick, hasn't been a great QB in St. Louis.

Bottom line you have a head coach that made things personal with Welker. It pissed of Brady and the team reacted quickly to sign a replacement. Amendola is not Welker, he doesn't have the same smarts. Most of what they do is based on Welker reading and reacting. I hate the pats as much as the next bills fan, but i think this move hurts that team. Welker was a 100 catch plus a season guy. It wasn't only the system or we would have seen others do the same in that system. Secondly, Amendola is injury prone, when week in and week out welker was available.

Im happy to see this happen, but as far as a football decision just flat out stupid by the pats

If he stays healthy, the Pats won't miss him at all.

The Pats were trying to cover their loss with Welker by signing Amendola quickly... And for more money they got less.

No way Amendola is better than Welker.

notice Welkers numbers before Brady? So mediocre backups become gold under Brady? Then why pay him more than Welker got? Turns out they can just sign any old middle of the road WR and instantly turn that player into a top performer.

Except for Ocho, Deion Branches return visit, and Brandon Lloyd

Or maybe Welker was just that good and needed a legit QB to throw to him. Welkers last year in Mia was with Culpepper... No, not the Vikings version.

Patriots are playing with fire a little. Hernandez and Gronk are already injury prone, and Amendola is wthout a doubt injury prone. Their top 3 targets right there. Well, Lloyd should really be in there, perhaps he is actually their top target, but they have some injury prone guys there.

Amendola has missed 20 games in the last two seasons with injury. He has not even played a seasons worth of games in TWO years. He is to Receivers as Wood is to Centers, a talented guy that can't stay healthy.

The Pats' track record with signing FA's is poor at best. Outside of Moss (Amendola shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as him) and Welker, who was a proven All-Pro in the Pats' system, the rest have been busts. Even Lloyd, who had a career year in (current Pats' OC and former Broncos HC) Josh McDaniels' system had a disappointing season last year despite being thrown to by a better QB than he had in Denver, and he's in danger of being cut because he's due a $3M roster bonus in 2 days.

The guy is a weapon in both the PR/KR game (actually led the league in total yardage in his only full season 2010 - 18th most in NFL history for a single season). He isn't afraid to block in the running game, actually claims to take pride in it, and does it well. I'm not claiming that he's Calvin Johnson by any stretch, but IF (again, big if) he stays healthy, he will be amongst the league leaders in total yardage. He is to WR's what Darren Sproles is to RB's, he does nothing great, but does everything well. Having said that, he plays for the Patriots, so I wish him nothing but the worst. But that doesn't mean that I'm going to look past the fact that he's a very talented and dangerous player.

With the KO's being moved-up, his KR skills are largely negated. As for punt returns (and with KO returns), they're not going to put someone so injury-prone as him back there, especially at $6M/year. Which is likely why they signed Leon Washington.
