    Terrible QB Class

Everyone agrees that this draft class is "terrible"... right?

Well, NFL Analyst Bucky Brooks recently released his latest big board. He's got 4 quarterbacks in his top 50.
    Geno Smith - #4
    Matt Barkley - #25
    Mike Glennon - #41
    EJ Manuel - #44

I'm curious if anyone has access to the big boards for Kiper, Mayock, McShay, etc.
I haven't seen Mayock's big board, but I know he recently came out and said Geno was "absolutely" a Top 10 pick.

I find it interesting that all the analysts seem to crap on this draft class, but then give 3-4 of them late first or second round grades.

    Re: Terrible QB Class

I think the doubts with many in this class are whether they can read a defense and not wilt under pressure. Last years class with Luck, RG3, Wilson and more set a standard and none look even remotely close to being NFL ready.

We're trying to see them in a better light than they actually are.

      Re: Terrible QB Class

Just because Bucky brooks has 4 in the top 50, it doesn't make the class any better.
Here's some top 100 ratings from the 2007 draft:

PFW final ratings: Brady Quinn #3, JaMarcus Russell #5, Trent Edwards #38, John Beck #65, Drew Stanton #71, Kevin Kolb #94
Mel Kiper from 2007 Draft Report: JaMarcus Russell #4, Brady Quinn #5, Drew Stanton #52, Trent Edwards #53, John Beck #67, Kevin Kolb #76, Troy Smith #90
Draft Insiders' Digest 2007 Draft Yearbook: JaMarcus Russell #4, Brady Quinn #5, Drew Stanton #25, Kevin Kolb #53

Bad QB draft classes happen-the last few years were atypical with 1-3 round picks making it as starters early on. This class will be a lot more like 2007 than 2011 or 2012.

          Agreed.

But the argument I keep hearing is "nobody has these QBs rated high" so we need to pass.

I'm trying to show that quite a few analysts do have some QBs rated high.

            Re: Terrible QB Class

Why don't you use evidence of what teams in the NFL are doing right now?

            Oakland has traded for Flynn.
Arizona will (maybe) trade for Palmer.
            KC traded for Alex Smith.
            Buffalo signed Kevin Kolb.

All of these teams have high draft picks and could draft these rookie QBs, but they don't want to. KC doesn't trade for Smith if there's a legitimate QB option for them at 1.

The QBs aren't highly regarded, but when the whole draft class isn't highly regarded either, then the QBs will still be ranked highly among them. Rankings within the draft class differ from rankings vs other drafts.

                This.

Bucky's not stupid. He knows the top QB will go in the top 10 regardless of where he SHOULD go. So of course he's going to say Geno is top 10. It'll make him look more accurate after the draft, which is his major concern, whereas a GM's primary concern is building a team and not building the most accurate draft board. It's a ranking based on strategy, not a player's ability.

All solid hedges on a draft bet since you need at least one guy who can play at least mediocre ball to prevent from going 0-16 or 1-15. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see two of those four draft a QB before the second round ends, or all four grab one in the first four rounds.

2012 was extremely rare!!! It compares to 1983 QB draft class, I think it surpasses 2011 QB class and will surpass Rivers, Manning, Rothlisburger Schuab QB class.

Draft clases like 2012 come around every 30 years or so. Clases like the 2011 maybe every 10-15 years or so. Its very rare, and each generation has its TOP QBs with some overlap. The Brady/Manning/Brees era is slowing nearing its end, and unless we get the next Top QB we will be a team of destitute and at best one and done!
