Ryan Nassib as a first-rounder picks up buzz

While West Virginia's Geno Smith is viewed as the draft's top quarterback prospect, Syracuse Ryan Nassib and Florida State's EJ Manuel continue to pick up first-round buzz.

NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell raised a few eyebrows last month when he opined on NFL Network's "Path to the Draft" that Syracuse's Ryan Nassib is the top quarterback in this draft class based on film study.

Cosell isn't alone in his high regard for Nassib. The National Football Post's Russ Lande, recently hired as college scouting director for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, has Nassib rated as the No. 1 player regardless of position on his draft board.

In talking to teams planning for the draft, SI.com's Peter King wrote Monday that he "keeps hearing" about Nassib and Florida State's EJ Manuel as late-first-round prospects. "Nassib in particular," King added, "and certainly more than Manuel."

One personnel man for a team not interested in drafting a quarterback told King: "No way if you want Nassib you think there's a realistic chance he gets past 41." That's where former Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone and the Buffalo Bills draft in the second round.............

Teams with an older quarterback looking for a prospect to groom might be better off targeting Nassib late in the first round than reaching for West Virginia's Geno Smith as a top-10 pick.

If this is true and the Bills want him. No way he gets past 8.

Last statement is telling in the part that MV quoted.

Nassib is likely not a guy ready to take over on Day 1. Now to our credit (and yes Op, that's credit) we have a system in place where we can afford to let a rookie sit and learn unlike other places. For all of those who want to bash the signing of Kolb it gives us a lot of insurance.

Also for twitter folks out there, @NFLosphy is a former NFL Ops guy who has taken to Twitter as an anonymous tweeter. He released his QB rankings last night and he has Tyler Bray #1, and Nassib #2.

this is exactly what the Kolb signing to me is all about. He may not be a franchise qb but his salary seems to say he's just a stop gap with a chance to be a starter if he earns it or plays better than expected while we develop a rookie.

I just hope Rex Ryan doesn't try to throw a monkey wrench in the works somehow...

The Jets are reported to be VERY interested in Nassib. If the Bills don't take him at #8, it would not surprise me if the Jets take him at #9.

The comparison of a young Drew Brees (SD years) is very interesting in the article. We'll see.

Was there ever any doubt that Kolb was intended to be anything other than a stopgap?

There seem to be specific people arguing against the idea that he is a franchise QB, although I still have yet to see anyone actually espouse that idea.

What interests/concerns me is that if we don't take our QB of the future with our first pick, we might need to trade back into the first round to get who we want. Unless we get lucky and trade down in the first.

Or maybe aim at a lesser QB in the second or third, or pray for a Brady in the 6th

I could live with a Brady with the 8th overall pick!

just hoping that the draft is deep at other positions like people say so that good teams feel like they can take their position of need and get value vs looking at a bray or nassib late in first round asking us to move back up.

i just like that nassib looks indestructible. he's a solid frame. and i think he's going to be quicker on the uptake with marrone than without.

Bray looks like a good arm, but he's young and we've had the big arm no brains guy. so i'm weary on him.

Or sooner, because If Ryan would go 9th on Nassib, who's to say, he might even go higher with a trade up of a couple of spots, (to screw us over and get a good QB)

which may not be that costly.
