Gil Brandt: Bills' Nathaniel Hackett is "future head coaching candidate"

The Buffalo Bills (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/buffalo-bills) hired a 33-year-old offensive coordinator this offseason, raising eyebrows within the fan base. In league circles, Nathaniel Hackett is well-respected - and you can put Gil Brandt at the front of the line (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000201016/article/ej-manuel-geno-smith-head-criticized-rookies-primed-to-shine?campaign=Twitter_writers_brandt).

"I've known Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett since he was about 8 years old, when his father, Paul, was a coach for the Cowboys," writes the former Dallas personnel man. "I think he's a very knowledgeable person - someone who has the look of a future head-coaching candidate - so I trust his opinion."

Brandt was referring to Hackett's opinion of EJ Manuel (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/193279/e-j-manuel) in the article, posted earlier this week at NFL.com. Paul Hackett was the passing game coordinator for the Cowboys from 1986 to 1988. Both left the team when Jerry Jones became the owner.

Buffalo hasn't lost a coordinator to an NFL head coaching job since Ted Marchibroda in 1992. Marchibroda had previously coached the Baltimore Colts in the 1970s, and was the offensive coordinator for three seasons before heading to the Indianapolis Colts (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/indianapolis-colts). Two defensive coordinators - Wade Phillips and Perry Fewell - were promoted from within to the head job, with Phillips reaching that level again in the years since. Former offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild also left the Bills at the end of the 2007 season to become the head coach at Colorado State.

Might Hackett be the next coordinator to bolt? At the very least, it's telling that the rhetoric has already begun.

Translation, he's the interim HC the last six weeks of the 2015 season. I know this team way too well.

I imagine he's fondling his Super Bowl ring and cackling, actually.

In retrospect the best plan of attack might have been keep Perry as HC and make Chan OC. As Perry was a Fitzpatrick guy so at the very least we might have seen more of Fitz earlier than later and may have never signed him to the long term deal yet one never knows.

I just wish the Bills had brought in another guy to be our QB coach, even if it was Nate's dad, as I don't like OC's who wear both hats. I know someone will come up with a list of great OC who also acted as QB coaches but personally prefer two guys versus one.

Natty Hackett is a cool "coach name." On a very shallow level, I think his namesake bodes well for him.

The young gun has risen incredibly high, incredibly quickly. Nothing to sniff at.

I'm not saying we need to book a sculptor to start working on Natty's bust sculpture, but the ceiling is certainly high for a 33 year old who's already coaching in the NFL.

He hasn't even had an NFL game as a coordinator, yet.
