I think it is safe to assume that this is a new serious health situation that she says she can't reveal now.

Going right to the drunk jokes Op? You have a lot of hate in you.

I don't hate Jim Kelly. He's my second favorite Bills player ever, and he was really cool when. I had some interactions with him at his football camp. I still wear his jersey. In fact, it's the only Bills jersey that I wear at the moment.

But it is what it is. There are alcoholics and addicts in my family- I've been to AA and Al-Anon meetings with them- and the stories of people kicking the habit for good the first time are few and far between. Most people in recovery are on and off. So, if you've got someone who has been fairly open with the public about his health suddenly being cryptic about it, falling off the wagon is a strong possibility.

That's the reality. Everyone always jumps to the conclusion that I'm being "negative" or "hateful" when the truth is that sometimes- often- reality just sucks. Don't accuse me because I'm willing to see things as they are.

Like I said, I like Kelly. But that's not going to stop me from acknowledging and, yes, joking about the reality that he has a problem. I guess some of you don't want to believe your sports heroes aren't perfect. I can't think of any other reason for the reactions tha happened here.

The Kelly's seem like good people. If Jill Kelly says it's serious, I'm inclined to believer her.

The health scare from March sounds ugly. Like he could have potentially developed oral cancer or something.

If it is in fact a relapse with alcohol, that would be better news IMO. At least he can "start over" if need be.

Thiesmann played at Notre Dame but is known mostly for his 12-year NFL stint with the Washington Redskins, where he was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and helped the team win Super Bowl XVII.

Kelly pulled out of the event due to a personal/family matter, according to event coordinator Tyler Schulte"

Well, I recall reading that Kelly was quite the party animal during his early-mid playing days. At some point in the mid-90's, he had a "come to Jesus" moment, stopped drinking and partying, and re-committed to his wife. If I was misinformed or if I am remembering it wrong, feel free to correct me.

As far as joking about his health, I take the mindset that anything is fair game for jokes. Some will like them, some won't, but everyone has something that they consider "offensive" because it hits a little too close to home. If we start limiting jokes based on that subjective standard, we'll be out of material for jokes in about 3 seconds.

As far as Jim Kelly's buying group, is there any actual evidence of it other than cryptic quotes to the media from Kelly himself? We all know Kelly doesn't have the money to buy the team outright, so he'd need some heavy backing if this were to happen. But I have yet to hear another name involved, let alone a name or names with enough bankroll to make it happen.

trapezeus
05-30-2013, 12:31 PM
the same evidence that he has a investor group exists on him having a drinking problem. but i've heard more about the investor group than an actual problem. no doubt they were party guys and i think we heard the story that superbowl 1 was poorly played because most of the guys had been out partying way past alcohol.

HE did have his jesus moment around the time hunter was born. not sure if that was because of abuse or just because he had a sobering event in his life.

you can joke about whatever, but when the first post is about a hero being sick, the second post can't be "he's drinking again" without having stepped over the line a little. i agree, mock whatever, but things on the line and past the line get scrutinized by the authority of good taste.

like i said, i'm with you99% of the time on most things. this once just seemed poorly timed.

http://www.onlymyhealth.com/what-causes-jaw-bone-cancer-1323949379

Causes of Jaw Bone Cancer (http://www.onlymyhealth.com/bone-cancer-1295949175.html)

Dental Causes – Cavities, broken teeth, abscesses and infection can lead to development of jaw cancer. This is felt as pain in the lower jaw.
Tobacco and alcohol – If you are an addict of any of the two, it aggravates the risk much higher. The chemicals and acids present in these addictives eats into body cells and leads to the development of cancer. Several other medical conditions also result from such a substance abuse.
Age and unhealthy diet (http://www.onlymyhealth.com/diet-plans-1295957443.html) – With advancing age, the ability of your body to fight diseases, i.e. the immune system takes a beating. You are not able to ward off diseases such as cancer. This is aggravated by a lifestyle of not having adequate nutrients. This allows the cancerous cells to invade the body and cause jaw bone cancer (http://www.onlymyhealth.com/cancer-1295950250.html).
Other diseases – Some medical conditions can cause jaw bone cancer. Leukoplakia is one such condition whose symptom is formation of whitish patches inside the mouth or throat. Another one is Erythroplakia, which causes red and raised patches in the mouth.
HPV – Human Papilloma Virus (http://www.onlymyhealth.com/human-papilloma-virus-hpv-1295953379.html) (HPV) is known to cause jaw bone cancer. It is a sexually transmitted virus and is one of the main reasons behind jaw bone cancer.

"Bills Nation" has ALWAYS been populated by a ton of dickheads. For example, how many people think it was ok that McKelvin's house was vandalized after we lost the opener against New England a few years back? How many people think it's ok to get tanked at a Bills game and beat up fans of other teams in the stands?

In general I agree with you, except for the bolded part. I doubt people go to see games and think I'm gonna get drunk and beat up another team's fans. Generally the thought that its time to beat up fans from other teams comes after someone is already pretty soused, and as such the decision wasn't the product of a rational thought. As for the McKelvin incident, yeah that was a stain on Bills nation.

i never thought of myself as a dickhead, but if rooting brady to get hurt makes me a dickhead...i am proudly a dickhead. i hate that guy, his style of play, his ability to accept all accolades and deflect all criticism. and there is a huge asterisk in my books that he continuously took low end offers (significant discounts) compared to other top QBs who had lesser credentials. it just cements in my mind that he knows exactly how the cheating with the patriots works and is totally fine getting that benefit because he knows he's a lacklaster 6th round pick without it.

That's not either question you asked. You asked "How does it have an effect on his life/recovery?" and "Does it make it my fault?"

The answer to "Why does it make you a dickhead?" is that cheering when another human being gets hurt to the point of requiring hospitalization, (likely) several surgeries, and a long painful rehab just because you don't like what colors he wears on his back makes you a dickhead.

Mostly because your answer is..."it's being a dickhead because it's being a dickhead."

And I was cheering when he got hurt for way more reasons than the colors he wears on his back. There are players on the Patriots that I actually like, but Tom Brady can go **** himself and I don't consider anyone who feels that way to be a 'dickhead.'

That's because it's freaking obvious. Like saying "pushing a child down the stairs is a dickhead move". You don't cheer when someone is forced into hospitalization, no matter what you think of that person.

Pushing a child down the stairs and having a positive emotion when you hear about a person, who's soul job is to entertain you, getting injured are 2 completely different things. Emotions are anything but 'freaking obvious.' You can just say that you don't know, it's OK.

http://www.onlymyhealth.com/what-causes-jaw-bone-cancer-1323949379

HPV – Human Papilloma Virus (http://www.onlymyhealth.com/human-papilloma-virus-hpv-1295953379.html) (HPV) is known to cause jaw bone cancer. It is a sexually transmitted virus and is one of the main reasons behind jaw bone cancer.

http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/explainer/2013/06/michael_douglas_hpv_why_oral_sex_can_cause_oral_cancer.html

Actor Michael Douglas has received praise (http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/movies/2013/05/behind_the_candelabra_steven_soderbergh_s_liberace_movie_starring_michael.html) in recent weeks for his portrayal of Liberace in the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra, in part due to his somewhat graphic performances of gay sex with co-star Matt Damon. But an extremely candid interview with the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/jun/02/michael-douglas-oral-sex-cancer)over the weekend is drawing attention to Douglas’ real, heterosexual bedroom practices.Candelabra is the first film the actor has completed since receiving treatment for throat cancer two years ago, and though many assumed the disease was caused by Douglas’s well-known penchant for tobacco and alcohol, he told the Guardian it was the result of giving oral sex to female partners. Can you get cancer from cunnilingus?

Yes. You can get it from any kind of oral sex, for that matter. As Douglas suggests in the interview, a direct link has been shown between the human papillomavirus, which can be transmitted through oral sex, and oropharyngeal cancers. HPV comes in more than 100 different strains, but only a few, such as HPV-16, are among the high-risk set responsible for causing cancer. Most strains cause no symptoms, and most sexually active adults have been exposed to one or more of them. According to the Centers for Disease C (http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm#a5)ontrol and Prevention, each year in the United States HPV causes an estimated 6,700 cases of oropharyngeal cancers in men and 1,700 in women.

Why?

Ah, resorting to elementary tactics...nice.

Pushing a child down the stairs is a dickhead move as it directly causes harm to someone who has done nothing to deserve it.

Being happy when a person who averages $15 million per year to play a game gets injured has no direct correlation to that person. It doesn't affect his recovery time, it doesn't make the injury any worse.

MikeInRoch
06-04-2013, 09:24 AM
Just as you want me to explain why I think being a "dickhead" doesn't require actual harm to be done to a person, you should have to explain why you think it does require it.

If you were to come on here and say "I'm glad all those people died in the Bangladesh building collapse.", that does no harm, but it still makes you a dickhead.

Next thing you know, we're telling "why did the chicken cross the road?" jokes because they're the only thing left. There's a lot of **** in life that sucks. Being able to laugh about it is one way to deal with it. I don't want to live in a world where people can tell others what they can and can't joke about. His hour of need? WTF does that even mean? What I said has no bearing on whether or not Jim Kelly is sick or whether or not he'll get better.

I made a joke. You didn't like it. Fine. Keep talking tough. You're not going to get me to back down with your fake, whiny moral superiority and you're not going to get me to do it with physical threats. You are threatening me because you feel I insulted a guy who played QB for your favorite football team over 15 years ago on the Internet. But I'm the douchebag? Yeah, ok.

...just when I thought that you couldn't be a bigger douchebag. What you said had no bearing on whether Jim Kelly was sick? Did you happen to notice the title of the thread? It says "Jim Kelly Sick?" There was every single indication that he indeed is sick, unless you think his wife might find it funny to post rumors on the Internet about her husbands health. That might be a hoot too, wouldn't it? She says "say a prayer for Jim's health." Instead, you call him a name "in jest" based on "what you read somewhere." Consider where you are saying these things, asswhole.

You are the douchebag, alright, and nothing I said was fake. ******* right I don't like it. You insult a guy based on "something you read" when his health is at serious risk, or there was every indication that it may be. Oh, but it's a joke, so it's understandable, if not commendable. Disgraceful. I don't personally know Jim Kelly, but I know people that do. He's a good person according to people that I trust.

Show some small measure of ****** RESPECT, douchebag.

First I never said I didn't KNOW that he was sick. I said my joke has NO BEARING on whether or not he's sick. That doesn't mean I didn't know- it means that what I say or don't say WILL NOT AFFECT HIS HEALTH IN ANY WAY. It's completely harmless.

Second, you're lecturing me for insulting Jim Kelly for "something I read" as you insult me for something you read on an Internet message board. Hypocrite.

Third, his health isn't at "serious risk." It's at some risk, but all indications are that this type of cancer is very treatable. So enough with the hyperbole.

Third, the guy threatening people on the Internet and repeatedly calling people "douchebag" and "asswipe" is going to try to lecture me about showing respect? I will not bow to your subjective notion of "respect" and I will not show someone what you consider "respect" because someone you know said he's a "good person." Not everyone thinks like you do. Deal with it.

Nice argument.

So what are you doing exactly to help Jim Kelly in his 'hour of need?'

There is no argument. There are those that think it's funny to put him down without apology in the process of finding out that he has cancer. Do you think there is something to argue about there? the man has cancer, so we'll call him names in the forum where he is most respected. If you are defending that, you are a punk as well. There is no argument.

I wish him the best and pray that he has a decent recovery. That's what I'm doing, as long as you ask, punk.

It's the same difference to a person that has no character.

And I'm done with this conversation. If you can't tell the difference, you are indeed a moron, a douchebag, and most of all, a punk.

Yeah that's all I got. That's all there is.
First, I didn't call him names. The only one who engaged in name-calling here is you.

Second, why should I have to apologize because he has cancer? I didn't give him cancer. My comment didn't give him cancer. It has nothing to do with me.

So if a person has character, and wishes his best to someone with cancer, there's an effect?

Jim Kelly is cancer free

“I found out great news on Wednesday,” Kelly said Monday at the opening of his 26th annual Jim Kelly Football Camp. “I don’t have to go through radiation treatment and chemo, which is a blessing. From what I’ve been told everything that they did in surgery, if I had to do radiation or chemo it would put me way back.”
