Edmonton Oilers (http://oilers.nhl.com/) general manager Craig MacTavish (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8449020) announced Saturday the team has fired coach Ralph Krueger. No replacement was immediately named. In his lone season as Edmonton's coach, Krueger went 19-22-7 and the Oilers finished third in the Northwest Division and 12th in the Western Conference. They have not made the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2006, when they reached the Final.
The new coach will be the Oilers' fourth since the start of the 2009 season (Pat Quinn (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8448240), Tom Renney, Krueger). MacTavish was the coach from 2000 to 2009, and was appointed GM on April 14.
Krueger inherited a team featuring a number of promising young players, including Jordan Eberle (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8474586), Taylor Hall (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8475791), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8476454), Justin Schultz (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8474602) and Nail Yakupov (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8476855). After opening the 2012-13 season with a 3-2 shootout victory at the Vancouver Canucks (http://canucks.nhl.com/), the hopes around Edmonton were that the Oilers might return to the playoffs for the first time since losing the Final to the Carolina Hurricanes (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/).
But the young club could not keep up with expectations, opening March with five straight losses before closing the season 3-9-0 and missing the playoffs by 10 points.

you say the Sabres are the laughingstock of the league what about Edmonton? well this opens up another coaching spot that Ruff could wind up landing.

How you going to feel about this after the Sabres tank next season and Regier replaces Ron Rolston?

The difference is Edmonton has 3 first overall picks to turn them around. Then throw in Gagne, Eberle and Schultz. I see no end in sight for the Sabres mess.

It's ridiculous that one franchise should get three top picks in a row. And still they tank again and get a #7? MacTavish ought to fire himself.

MacTavish just took over at the end of the year so he's not at fault. No D and a terrible goalie doesn't help either.

Edmonton hasn't done SQUAT with them, or any others they're going to get, because they don't have one thing: veterans who are willing to sign with the Oil and teach the young guns how to win. And until that happens, they're not going to amount to much. Take that to the bank.

or they can stick with the youngs guys until they mature and then be a power house for years...Patience is a virtue.

This is a proverb from the Ralph Wilson book of Winning Rules of Small Market Owners.

They don't have veteran experience? Ryan Smyth, Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky. All veterans. Well Horcoff and Smyth are good leaders. That team needs really 2 things. A puck moving d man to get those forwards the puck on the rush and a goaltender. Say what you want but they will be a good team well before buffalo because of the draft picks.
