Mario: Bills' philosophy 'Kill em or hurt em'

If you believe Mario Williams, the Buffalo Bills have a very aggressive mindset under new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. In a post-bounty scandal NFL, do the Bills need to tone down the tenor?

Mike Pettine's defense has manhandled the offensive line during the Buffalo Bills' mandatory minicamp this week in what one beat writer described as "all-out piranha mode."Pettine's creative methods, including a dizzying array of blitzes, certainly seem to be paying off. The defensive coordinator's message, on the other hand, might be raising a few antennas in NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's office.

Asked to describe Pettine's philosophy, defensive end Mario Williams replied, via the Buffalo News, "He usually says 'Kill 'em or hurt 'em.' That's what I always hear."

It's hardly a radical philosophy. The nature of the game lends itself to a more aggressive and even belligerent approach on defense. The phrasing pails in comparison to the colorful epithets used by the NFL martinets of a half-century ago.

The simple truth is that defensive coaches are dealing with an altered landscape since the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal. One doesn't have to stretch far to note the similarities between Pettine's "Kill 'em or hurt 'em" message and former Saints coordinator Greg Williams' "Kill the head and the body will die" dictum.

We don't expect Goodell to take action against Pettine. But the Bills' coaching staff might be asked to tone it down in an era where health and safety have become the prime directive.
Well, this is certainly an aggressive style like some have been asking for. That bit about Goodell was just stupid though.

Re: Mario: Bills' philosophy 'Kill em or hurt em'

Metaphorically speaking the quote " kill 'em or hurt 'em" simply means being more aggressive. Of course, leave it to the media to exaggerate, and take the words literally. That's amateur journalism in my opinion. This all started because it was Mario Williams who said it. If it was Ron Brooks who said it, no one would care enough to even consider it an issue at NFL.Com or PFT. Just saying.

'When asked about Mario's comments, the commish said: "I will talk to Mr Pettine so we can get this team in line with our anti injury/anti competitive spirit and the philosophy will be changed to kill them with kindness."'

small market team does something the commish doesn't like = back breaking, message sending sanctions.

big market boston team without a real fan base does something no one likes = burn the tapes and never discuss again even when there is proof its still going on.

something tells me the bills are going to pay for having said this. I mean Good ole roger hasn't been in front of a camera since April.
