Mike Pettine's defense has manhandled the offensive line (http://www.wgr550.com/pages/16577469.php?contentType=4&contentId=13225476) during the Buffalo Bills (http://www.nfl.com/teams/buffalobills/profile?team=BUF)' mandatory minicamp this week in what one beat writer described as "all-out piranha mode (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/press-coverage/2013/06/defense-shows-no-mercy-in-second-minicamp-practice.html)."Pettine's creative methods, including a dizzying array of blitzes, certainly seem to be paying off. The defensive coordinator's message, on the other hand, might be raising a few antennas in NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's office.

Asked to describe Pettine's philosophy, defensive end Mario Williams (http://www.nfl.com/player/mariowilliams/2495982/profile) replied, via the Buffalo News, "He usually says 'Kill 'em or hurt 'em.' (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/press-coverage/2013/06/mario-williams-relays-mike-pettines-credo-kill-em-hurt-em.html?ref=bmh) That's what I always hear."

It's hardly a radical philosophy. The nature of the game lends itself to a more aggressive and even belligerent approach on defense. The phrasing pails in comparison to the colorful epithets used by the NFL martinets of a half-century ago.

The simple truth is that defensive coaches are dealing with an altered landscape since the New Orleans Saints (http://www.nfl.com/teams/neworleanssaints/profile?team=NO)' bounty scandal. One doesn't have to stretch far to note the similarities between Pettine's "Kill 'em or hurt 'em" message and former Saints (http://www.nfl.com/teams/neworleanssaints/profile?team=NO) coordinator Greg Williams' "Kill the head and the body will die" (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8281a52a/article/gregg-williams-speech-takes-saints-scandal-to-another-level) dictum.

We don't expect Goodell to take action against Pettine. But the Bills (http://www.nfl.com/teams/buffalobills/profile?team=BUF)' coaching staff might be asked to tone it down in an era where health and safety have become the prime directive.

Well, this is certainly an aggressive style like some have been asking for. That bit about Goodell was just stupid though.

Metaphorically speaking the quote " kill 'em or hurt 'em" simply means being more aggressive. Of course, leave it to the media to exaggerate, and take the words literally. That's amateur journalism in my opinion. This all started because it was Mario Williams who said it. If it was Ron Brooks who said it, no one would care enough to even consider it an issue at NFL.Com or PFT. Just saying.

'When asked about Mario's comments, the commish said: "I will talk to Mr Pettine so we can get this team in line with our anti injury/anti competitive spirit and the philosophy will be changed to kill them with kindness."'

Seeing all these pails in comparison makes me want to be a beat writer for NFL.com.

They need a guy who specialize on sandcastle building.

small market team does something the commish doesn't like = back breaking, message sending sanctions.

big market boston team without a real fan base does something no one likes = burn the tapes and never discuss again even when there is proof its still going on.

something tells me the bills are going to pay for having said this. I mean Good ole roger hasn't been in front of a camera since April.

Bills coach Doug Marrone released a statement to The Associated Press on Friday in which he addressed Williams' remarks.

"Mike has assured me that he has never used the word 'kill' in his terminology regarding our defensive strategy," said Marrone in the statement. "He has used the word 'hurt' as a term that essentially means beating the running back to a spot in a pass-rushing drill and not in a physical sense. Mike is aware that the term 'hurt' could be taken out of context, and he is changing his terminology."

Williams also took to Twitter on Friday to explain himself:

"Just to clarify a choice of words I used: The phrase 'kill them' has never been said by Coach Pet or any of my coaches/teammates," Williams wrote. "I said it as a figure of speech from my 'perspective' not literally or any actual intention.

"Coach Pet has led us in an aggressive D since Day One. We've operated in a 'beat them' mode this offseason w/ a goal of mentally hurting the offense (future opponents) by being physical and disruptive at the line of scrimmage & through any pass protection. Pressure, TFL, turnovers & sacks."

The whole thing is completely ridiculous, and Mario should know better

Yes and yes. I get that he's excited about the energy and aggressive style, but he (and all of them) just need to keep quiet and be smarter than that.

Pretty soon, you won't be able to tell your defense to execute.

Maybe it's just me but it's looking like Mario Williams was not the best use of 100 million dollars the franchise could have spent. Maybe he'll tear it up this year under Pettine but he's a flailing witless octopus in the sea of Clue.

This whole thing is just ridiculous, I don't blame Williams at all and anyone that thinks the word Kill was meant literally, is an idiot and should be ki****.
