The Colorado Avalanche (http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/team/17/colorado-avalanche) are trying to rebuild down the middle, so signing center Matt Duchene (http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/player/4683/matt-duchene) to a long-term deal, as they did on Thursday, makes sense. The sides agreed on a five-year deal worth, according to Stephen Whyno (https://twitter.com/SWhyno/status/357948813413072896) of the Canadian Press, $6 million annually. Duchene, 22, had 43 points in 46 games last season for Colorado, tied for most on the team, after an injury-filled 2011-12 season. The No. 3 pick in 2009, Duchene has 82 goals and 111 assists in 266 career games. http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2013-07-18/matt-duchene-contract-avs-nathan-mackinnon-ryan-oreilly-paul-stastny-trade-rumor
