All: The new Billszone site with the updated software is scheduled to be turned on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The company that built it, Dynascale, estimates a FOUR HOUR shut down, from 8pm Pacific, (5pm Eastern) while they get it up and running. Nobody will be able to post in any forum until they are done. Afterwards, you may need to do a web search for the site, as old links will not work, because the site is getting a new IP address. Please be patient. If there are bugs, we will tackle them one at a time. Remember the goal is to be up and running with no glitches by camp. Doing this now assures us of that, because it gives us all summer to get our ducks in a row. Thank you!
This teams improvement will begin with how quickly the D can improve. (The O will take longer ). The Front 7 play is key in this scheme.
I don't think there is any pressure on the guy, since expectations (mine, at least) are low year 1 of a new regime. It WILL take time and the Bills past means nothing to this new staff. Attacking D, instead of a failing prevent D we seemed to employ forever. I won't know how to act if it actually works. Can't wait to see it.

Sounds like last year's hype... That one turned out to be quite...scary.
probably the number two all-time bills shocker was how pathetic pornstachios defense could possibly be. i mean he had enough pieces to work with that they should have been at least decent but they were epic bad
of course all time bills shocker was losing to deep scrubs to throw away a playoff spot. lets never speak of that again
I'm excited for Pettine to get this defense to play to their talent level. I would love for opposing teams to be uneasy about lining up across from this D.
I have high hopes for Pettine but he needs to prove that he can do it by himself first. He was the DC by title with the Jets but it was Ryan's defense and him running the show and calling the plays up until basically last year.
It's the same way with any other HC who decides to call his own plays and incorporate his own system on offense or defense. Marrone wasn't any different when it came to the Saints. He was the OC by title but it was Payton calling the plays with his system. Lets just hope both of these guys learned well from their good offensive and defensive mentors.
If Pettine is the real deal then I can see this defense being in the middle of the pack this season around the Top 15 give or take. There is some talent to work with on paper especially with the defensive line. The secondary has some holes with their #2+ CB's but the safety position should be alright considering Byrd comes back and plays like he should. The linebacker unit is a complete mess though. The only way this will be an average unit this season is if Alonso comes out of the gates playing at at top level as a rookie and Bradham and Lawson play decent football.
It will take another year to acquire more players that fit the system and for everyone to get accustomed to it. We need Dareus to become what a #3 pick should be along with Gilmore growing on last year and becoming a legitimate #1 CB. If some other younger players work out along with future additions then we could have a Top 10 defense in 2014. All of this is depending on Pettine being the real deal along with some players breaking out though.
I think Petttine was a good hire on a new coaching staff though and has potential. It's time to see if he can do it on his own and if he learned well from Rex Ryan. If he did then we will be in decent shape for the future.

I think Wanny went around the bend. He did a decent job with the Pitt Panthers, so there was some expectations. Expectations of a blitz - now and then. But no. I suspect that opposing clubs had to watch about 5 minutes' worth of game film to get (and solve) his scheme. Sad.

It wasn't a shocker if you actually read unbiased reports rather than the rah-rah fan boys.
I don't know why some people think it will take time.
The Jets did not take time when Rex was named HC, The 49ers did not take time when Harbaugh was named HC.
If there are good players in place which I think there are on defense, I think it will be a quick turnaround from last year.
When our old friend Wade Phillips became defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, the defense went from 3rd worst to 2nd best in yards allowed, and from 4th worst to 4th best in points allowed...all in ONE year.
No way the Bills don't improve immensely on that side of the ball this year IMO.
