If it's in available cap space every season then we're fighting for the championship almost every season and have some titles.

We have the 3rd most cap space in the league and yet we couldn't keep Levitre or get Byrd signed to an extension. The Bills and front office apologist will always say we need to save this money for other players the will be free agents 2-4 years from now like they say every season. Then when them same players become free agents we need to save our cap space again for the next guys in line that we have drafted over the previous several seasons while we were waiting for them to become free agents. Had we signed them same players they would be calling it a good deal though. It's the syndrome that if they are on the Bills then they're good but when/if they're not then they weren't very good to begin with.

That's fine and dandy as long as you are using it to keep your good players and saving it for somebody who you will need to give a big contract to very soon. The problem is that doesn't happen very often. If the Bills want to keep guys like Woods, Spiller or some others then they should start thinking about giving them an extension at least a year before they become a free agent. You end up getting the contract cheaper and it ends up running out before they hit the wrong side of thirty and you end up getting them for the rest of their prime years.

You could even sign somebody like Spiller to an extension right now that would run him through his 30th birthday instead of waiting 2 or 3 years. If they did keep him at that point then it will cost even more money and the contract will take them kind of guys past their 30th birthday and many times when they are losing a step. The prime years to have non-QB locked up for is usually between 25-30 years old. Depending on the position and player usually after 30 years of age many of the players start breaking down and lose a step. Especially with positions like RB. At 30 years old or so you can determine if they're worth another few years on your team.

For some reason though the Bills and too many fans have an obsession with signing/re-signing average players for 4-6 million a year(depending on the position value) instead of using that money on top level players for 6-10 million a year. They would rather have a collection of spot starters, specialist, rotational players and average starters instead of using that money to keep your top level players and replacing the other positions with draft picks.

This has been our motto for years now and that's why we're just about reaching the status of the Bungles teams of the 1990's. They went 14 straight years without making the playoffs or posting a winning record. We have now went 13 straight years and counting without making the playoffs and only have one winning record during that span.

Them teams were even worse then ours but the drought is just as bad. We're rarely ever one of the worse teams in the league but we're always around a 6 win team or so drafting in or around the Top 10 of the draft. We stay the same and never get better and rarely ever get worse. If Whaley, Marrone and/or Manuel doesn't work out then we're at least another few years away and will surpass the Bungle status.

Much as one would like to hear about contract news with Spiller, he came into the league with a #1 pick contract before the rookie cap. It's an open question as to an extension, especially if the club features him next season - damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Spiller signed a five-year, $25 million contract that could escalate to $37.5 million. At the very least he is making 5 million a year which will end up with more then that assuming he reaches many incentives. Arian Foster recently signed a 5 year contract worth 43.5 million a year. It would take around 8+ million a year to sign if to a contact extension right now. If he really breaks out over the next two years of his contract that price tag will only go up.

I love Spiller's game changing abilities but I've never been one for giving big long-term guaranteed contracts to RB's unless they are durable, game changers and still 25+/- years of age. RB's are the easiest position to replace in the draft and also the easiest position for a rookie to step in immediately and produce. They also have the shortest prime years then any position in the NFL. By the time you're 30 years old you're no longer the same player and it's all downhill from there except for rare exceptions. Some even lose production earlier depending on their recent workload or ability to stay healthy.

Right now I would sign him to an extension that would take him to his 30th birthday and especially if he delivered this season as the feature back. He shouldn't and better not be in a situation like last year with Fred Jackson. Jackson should only be a compliment and to give him some rest during games. RB's definitely only have that one chance to score a contract and most of them want that ASAP. They know the history of 30+ year old running backs. Some have broken down or lose production sooner then that if they have been overworked.

We have plenty of cap space we're not using for the next two years of the deal. I would try and get him signed to a new 5 year contract for around 8 million a year. That would give him a raise these next two seasons along with having him for another 3 years after that. Make his cap numbers higher for this season and next season while we have plenty of room and his contract would be very reasonable the next few years after that.

You offer him a new contract now with around 20 million in guaranteed money along with the raise and there would be a good chance to get him done and out of the way now at a cheaper price if they plan on keeping him past his rookie contract. With RB's and their short careers and risk of knee injuries with all the hits they take it would be tough to turn down the extra guaranteed money he would be getting with a new deal this season.

His contract would also be ending when he is 30 years old and that would give him a chance to score another shorter term contract for good money if his body was still in good shape. If he waits until he is 27 to sign a new contract then you're looking at 32 years old before that 5 year deal is over. There isn't much demand for 32 year old RB's no matter how good you've been in the past outside of a 1 or 2 year deal at a reduced price. We would also get him for the rest of his prime years. It would be a win-win for both sides to get something done sooner rather then later if the front office views him in their long-term plans.

I believe in finding your good young players you want to keep and signing them to an extension at least one year before their rookie contract is up and ideally two years before it's up. The longer you wait the more you also end up paying too. The worse thing you can do is wait until they become a FA and can hit the open market unless you use a franchise tag.

$20M will buy Ralph the funeral he deserves.

I hope that came out right.

Re: Salary Cap thread updated 4 times a day

Well there is an extra 20 million in Ralph's pocket this year. If I were teams like Dallas and New England who has to share revenue from their ticket sales I wouldn't be happy about this. It's intentions is to give smaller market teams a better chance to compete. If you have them teams pocketing a good chunk of that money every year then that defeats the purpose of it. That's like the Marlins in MLB. They get millions in luxury tax money but they don't spend it on their team and just end up pocketing the money. They end up making a profit that's towards the top of the league every year even though sometimes they are lucky to only pull in 10,000 fans a game.

It's not like this is a one year thing. Outside of a couple seasons we have consistently been 10+ million under the cap for the past decade or so. If they were saving the money to retain some younger players even that would be different. All of this money and we didn't re-sign Levitre, Byrd or any other younger player to a contract extension this offseason. This would've been a perfect time for them extensions. In the end it's just money Ralph will put back in his pocket instead of using it for the future of the team.

Brad Smith is our 5th highest paid player on the team . Also in the top 10 we have a 2nd RB who is over 30 years of age who hasn't been able to stay healthy for two years, a backup DT and a #3 level CB. Then 11-13 we have a kicker who has lost his leg, an average TE and a tackle who is a spot starter/backup. All of them making 2.8 million or more this season.

All that and we're still 20+ million under the salary cap. Take all of this into account and imagine how some still wonder why this is the worse team in the NFL for the past decade. Or how some still thinks that Buddy Nix did a good job. Basically 7 of our top 13 highest paid players are either backups, past their prime or an average starter on their best day.

But hey there is a reason why average starters and backup/rotational players love coming to Buffalo. Only in Buffalo can multiple rotational players, backups and average at best starters can make 3+ million a season.
