Closer than you think.

Gerald Austin, a retired NFL official, recalled his conversation with the scout.
"He called me one day and said, 'I have an official that I think you need to look at,'" he said. "I said, 'OK, Joe, what's his name?' And he says, 'His name is Sarah.' I said, 'Sarah?' He said, 'Yeah, he's a she.'"

The question is this: is she big/strong enough to survive getting bowled over by 250 lbs of LB trying to tackle 200 lbs of RB when a run breaks up the middle? And does she have the speed/reflexes to get out of the way of professional athletes running full speed?

I don't have a problem with it as long as she's physically up to the task.

Can't see why this would be an issue whatsoever. It would be pretty cool if she was the head referree that made the calls to the crowd

Dude they moved the Umpires out of there years ago (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5016012)

In this link you can see there's no ref in the middle of the D anymore.

As long as she's not a Pats fan, I'm okay with it.

I just hope they don't start making men into cheerleaders.

No thank you on female refs, they need to get rid of the older refs too, you should have to be in really good physical condition to be an NFL ref IMO, and part of that is also to be able to be run over by someone.

Considering they have older men on ref crews, some not in the greatest of shape, it is hard to imagine a woman couldn't hang. It requires knowledge of the rules and concentration, but is isn't like running a marathon.

If she gets the job done correctly then what's the problem? See the issue here is the second that she gets a call wrong or makes a questionable one, it'll be all over the news and those middle class male callers will call her inferior. "Get back in the kitchen!," they'll cry, and she will release her estrogen upon the woeful misogynist pigs! THE WOMEN SHALL RISE!

... *cough*... no clue where that came from... maybe from having two mothers... damn gay marriage.... woah where did that come from?!

/joke.

No - but be prepared for what goes on in NASCAR - they might as well have renamed the Daytona 500 the Danica Patrick 500. The Talledega/Danica 500, etc.

It will be a Tedy Bruschi redux.

Could be, some Vag sniffing announcer will make big deals about how awesome it was she did not call a holding a penalty, or did............

The way the NFL is going why not Female refs?

They should have QB's play in skirts as well.

Same argument took place years ago about women in the military, police force, manager level in the workplace, postal service, just about any other profession. And they're all doing just fine. I can't believe we still have people making excuses for their discriminatory views.
