Biggest takeaways from Week 1 of preseason action - No separation at QB

    4. Everyone is thrilled about rookie EJ Manuel's first outing for the Buffalo Bills. We'd like to point out he averaged roughly 5 yards per attempt (The Gabbert Zone) and executed his great two-minute drive against the Indianapolis Colts' third-string defense. Manuel wasn't asked to do a lot in his first career game, which isn't his fault. But let's not get carried away.
Did Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez do enough to take a lead in the New York Jets' QB race? Gregg Rosenthal weighs in on what you might have missed during the first full slate of preseason action.

I have to agree with it being only one preseason game against 3rd stringers but it was still a good showing by a rookie QB in his first preseason game.

Lets not get carried away is the correct statement - and it goes both ways. He really didnt do much in the game, and it is his first start at the NFL level in any capacity...basically its tough to take ANYTHING away from that start. Im looking more at his accuracy on throws, which wasnt great, and has been the knock on him a bit. He put the ball near where it was supposed to be but didnt lead his receivers correctly, which is the real sign of a polished NFL QB, which he obviously isnt.

That was a bigger problem early than it was during the 2-minute drill, and honestly if he's going to have a knock on him early I'm glad it's precision passing. He's got a great coaching staff here, and he has a personal QB coach. Accuracy can be taught and retained through muscle memory. Making the right reads is a much more cerebral skill and he looks like he's got that one locked up already.

All in all, if this is what the 'raw' prospect EJ Manuel looks like in his first NFL action, I think the sky really is the limit.
