I don't agree with this decision, but we'll see how it plays out.

Re: Looks like Kolb is starting Friday night.
Zero surprise.
They have seen a lot of Manuel due to the injury. This is about the HC getting a real good look at the competitor as soon as possible.
Like it or not this is likely Kolb's job to lose... A new HC needs to show everyone he will do whatever it takes to win and furthermore that he will start the guy that gives him the best chance to win.
It takes balls and it's very risk to start a rookie when the other guy has way more experience. It's a conservative, BS, way to look at it but I can understand a new HC not taking the big risk.
That said, Marrone would probably secretly like to see this question answer itself even as soon as after this next game.
Kolb only needs to be as productive maybe even a bit less so to keep the competition going. The vet experience means a lot to a new HC.Last edited by X-Era; 08-14-2013, 07:53 PM.

Re: Looks like Kolb is starting Friday night.
I guess my thing is that Manuel played well. Kolb is not here to start for the next 4-5 years or more. So why bother? Rookies have been starting lately, and starting with better success than in past years. Starting with Stafford in Detroit I feel like rookie QBs have gotten a better grip on playing in the NFL. Why not just roll with Manuel and let him progress the best way possible?True fans want wins, not draft picks.

Re: Looks like Kolb is starting Friday night.
I'm assuming that the coaching staff told him he'd have a fair chance at the starting position regardless of who or when they drafted a QB. So I'd say this is following through with their word to Kolb and allowing him to actually compete now that he's ready to go.

Re: Looks like Kolb is starting Friday night.
ej did a little above average in his preseason debutt. really only ran against the ones, did a nice job in the two minute against the threes, no big mistakes - a little better than i would have expect for a rookie first start
but they gotta see where kolb is against the ones. id prolly start ej next game and have him play the half, then kolb for the finale and probably start him at the opener
so rules judge mh so it shall beOne set of rules for all in the beloved community

This season is just practice again. Might be fun though.

Re: Looks like Kolb is starting Friday night.
My only hope is that they don't want EJ to think that he's being handed the starting job. There is something to be said for making him earn it, or at the very least make him think he is earning it. Not starting in one preseason game is not going to be the differencemaker in his career, but letting him start establishing bad habits of thinking things will come to him unearned could hurt him in the long-run.

Shape up ? He said that there would be an open competition for the starters job and he should have his decision by 10 days before the opener, unless one of them really separates himself from the others. No QB has clearly looked better than another, but you want Marrone to go against what he told the players and take Kolb out of the competition two weeks into camp, because you don't like him. That will really go over great with the team when he doesn't stick to what he said. Losing credibility with your players is not a way to "shape up."Last edited by kishoph; 08-15-2013, 04:06 AM.
