Report: No tag provision for Byrd

The Bills signing of Jairus Byrd to his franchise tender apparently did not contain any extra language concerning future use of the franchise tag.

NFL.com’s Albert Breer is reporting that there were no extra provisions in Byrd’s franchise contract indicating that language stipulating that the Bills cannot use the franchise tag on him in the future is not included in the pact.

So if for some reason the Bills and Byrd are unable to reach a long term agreement at the end of the regular season, Buffalo would be able to tag Byrd again if they chose to do so.
Looks like the Bills won this round... Didn't pay anymore than the tag required and didn't lose the ability to tag him again, if necessary.

Yes this is awesome news and kinda feels like he may want to be here long term which would be awesome as well. I thought for sure he was not gonna report till we agreed not to tag him in 2014. Definitely a win for the new FO.

I honestly don't see them tagging him again. Would be very expensive to do so.

That's great news. If for some reason we couldn't sign him then at least we have the option of tagging and trading him at the end of the season.

if they tag him again, they will get the long term deal done. he wont play two years in a row on a one year deal with no security. the tag next year is simply a bargaining tool and it puts us in a great spot to get a long term deal done.

No tag clause gives Byrd not too much leverage for a long term holdout in the future, I would believe. It has the potential to turn into a Joey Galloway situation with the Seahawks from a few years ago, but I don't see that happening with all of the potential money he might be losing.

Byrd has NO leverage seeing there is no tag provision. Awesome news for the Bills. I see him signing longterm or tagged and traded. Very nice

                    Yes, yes, yes.

If he is about to hit the open market with no long-term deal signed next year, he will be tagged and signed, or tagged and traded. That's good, because there is no way the Bills come out of this with nothing. A high draft pick or Byrd, most likely.

Takes the edge off of Doug Whaley quite a bit, I would imagine.

Whaley looks like taking the Steeler's page with him, not bowing to non reporting tactics.

Problem is a re-use of the tag will also carry a hefty premium when it's used again.

120% of the previous figure... Which is 6.9 so it's 8.28 for next year.

If we wanted to pay 8.28 we might as well just sign him to 8 per year and pay a significant par of it as a bonus and reduce the cap hit.

Yep. It's pretty rare for a team to tag anyone twice in a row.

To be honest, what usually happens after a team tags a player: 1) they work out a long term deal, 2) the player underperforms and team decides tagging him again isn't worth it and let him go. Based on what I've seen, those two options happen the majority of the time. Hopefully Byrd ends up being the former case.
