View Full Version : People are deluding themselves about Jerry Hughes

I'm not buying into Hughes at all, people are fooling themselves if they think he is any good. He is terrible at setting the edge and holding up against the run, and he is a mediocre pass rusher. He just doesn't do enough, you can find guys like that anywhere.

I knows he flashed some in preseason play, but he does that every year. He had 1.5 sacks as a rookie in preseason and proceeded to make no impact at all. He had 3 sacks in preseason in 2012, then went out and had 4 sacks the entire year on a bad defense that needed play-making ability badly. Now he has 3 more sacks in preseason, but he will disappear again like he always does.

Preseason is not the real thing. Hughes is basically a little-bigger version of Aaron Maybin. Do you think Indy would have dumped him if he had any real ability to contribute? They play the same defense as the Bills and gave up on the guy, because he can't do enough. He will flash and make a play every 3-4 games, and then do nothing else the rest of the time. He has middle-of-the-road ability as a pass-rush specialist, but offers nothing else. You can pick guys like him up off the street.

Sometimes a change in scenery and system could make a player better. While I'm not banking on him being anything special, Sheppard hasn't done anything either.

I will agree he's being overrated, but we gave up a guy we were prepared to cut to get him, so I'm not too worried about it. Seems like a decent gamble to take.

White for Lewis, Sheppard for Hughes... I see no falloff in those trades. If we're even talking about someone who we traded for then that's a plus, rather than NOT talking about a guy (Sheppard) who we were pretty sure was doing nothing and going to be cut.

OK, Name some players the Bills could pick up that would be better than Hughes.

I will be sure to resurrect this thread after about 8 games are played.

The hype here may be a little much for Hughes but I went to camp a couple times and attended the Vikings game.

I wasn't seeing things. He was hustling his arse off and defintely making a difference. Not making him out to be a all-star but he showed he should be on the field at all times. Made a couple nice tackles near the LOS on RB's while coming from the far side of the field.

He's not just a desgnated pass rusher/one trick pony. Twice the player Sheppard ever was.

Are Bills fans always trying to tear down a guy that shows a little something?

Feel free, I'd be happy to admit I was wrong.

I have no issue with the trade, as Sheppard was a stiff. However, people who think Hughes will have an impact are deluding themselves. There are guys who are going to be cut today who can offer the same as what he can. He may end up with 4-5 sacks if he plays this year, but he will have no impact otherwise and isn't the kind of player who contributes to a winning team. I've watched him his whole career, he is terrible. He is basically the Colts version of Aaron Maybin, and he will have the same impact with the Bills that Maybin had with the Jets.

i think making that assumption is no different than those saying he is gonna be an all star. except its easier to say, hey this guy is no good, because odds are on your side. fact of the matter is that he has flashed some nice plays in the preseason, and he was drafted where he was for a reason, he has a skill set that teams covet. whether that translates to the nfl field this year or ever, remains to be seen, but i will keep my fingers crossed.

if he has 5 sacks that would have been tied for 3rd on the team last year. I'd take that. And no Maybin didn't do that with the jets. You make no sense.

Maybin had 6 sacks for the Jets, but made little real impact. Hughes is similar, he may get an odd sack, but he will make little impact on the defense. When you look at his overall play, it is a negative.

Maybin was drafted higher than Hughes, but that didn't mean he can play. This guy is the same every year, he makes some flash plays in preseason, but once the game starts he gets dominated. His speed and athleticism allow him to make the occasional play when a team makes a mistake, but he is a terrible football player. In Indy, he would get physically washed out of plays. He isn't any good. Why do you think they got rid of him?

Hughes > Sheppard. That's all that matters, really. Not expecting much either.

I think you're overstating the scope of Hughes-mania.

I can only think of one person who hypes Jerry Hughes on this forum.
