Dowling- 2nd rounder
Cunningham- 2nd rounder
Mesko- 5th rounder

Having a ton of darts apparently doesn't make them hit the bulls eye anymore than any other team.

And in COMPLETELY unrelated news, Buffalo is dumpster diving for cornerbacks and quarterbacks on the eve of the season because Nix's DB picks nearly all busted and he took one QB in 3 seasons - in the 7th.

Is that roster issues that weren't adequately addressed or drafting poorly? I realize they are related but IMO the Bills have drafted way better than the Pats over the past 4-5 years.

Gilmore is the only DB that Nix drafted high & he looks pretty damn good.

And EJ was drafted by NIX in the FIRST RD, not the 7th.

Teams with good QB's draft well. Teams that don't have a QB don't draft well.

This is why I was all in on "suck for Luck"

Yes Buddy Nix should be given all the credit for this current team.

When we go 3-13, the homers will turn on the coaching staff.

Gilmore's injury makes him a bust after being touted as a shut down guy coming in to the season? Weird. Byrd is a bust? Strange... thought he wanted top safety money. Aaron Williams looks at home in the safety position... Nah, bust and fodder. EJ Manuel wasn't drafted in the first round, either. Glenn, Hairston, Bradham, Carrington, Dareus... none of them are starting material. Moats, Troup, Easley, Graham, Searcy, Brooks... no business being on an NFL roster let alone a role player.

Glad we got rid of all those busts and losers.

It's a misconception that top tiers who cut rookies are bad at drafting. Top teams have less competition for spots and more depth. It's harder for rookies to make squads and stick for multiple years. They are also able to target drafts towards certain positions or sides of the ball where they feel like they can get better.

The Panthers are hardly a top team. They drafted higher than the Bills when Cam was drafted & had just fired their HC.

And while the Pats* do have Brady, they are VERY weak & soft in their defensive secondary. They also have not drafted a GOOD WR in forever.

A GOOD DB or WR would have no problem making the Pats* team.

It's not their drafting or Belichick's "genius" game plans that keep them winning. Figure it out, it's the system they've had in place all these years. Anyone who doesn't believe that is crazy or has the wool pulled over their eyes.

So, both you & draft boy are WRONG.

Every year there is turnover on EVERY team.

Just look at the receivers the Pats* lost this year alone.

There is no reason a good team should not have at least a few high drafted players not only make the team, but make the team BETTER.

Unless they end up as lucky as the Colts did and have a franchise QB fall into their laps when Brady does retire.

Most teams when they lose the best QB their franchise has ever had go over the cliff.

Hell, look at the Bills we're in a freefall abyss since Kelly left.

That's exactly how it's supposed to work. The good teams draft after the bad teams- eventually the bad teams improve into good teams and the good teams fall off.

Unfortunately it hasn't played out like that yet.

That's what the NFL would like you to believe. There's parity! Except there really isn't. The same like 10 teams are good year in and year out with a couple exceptions thrown in every year.

Teams that draft well, do so even with lower picks.

Yes they won't get a GREAT player picking lower, but unless that GREAT player is a QB it won't matter that much if they have a team of GOOD players.

The decision to cut ties with Cunningham again shows the Patriots' willingness to wear their mistakes and move on. A second-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Cunningham never broke through on Bill Belichick's defense, managing 3.5 sacks in three seasons. The move comes three days after the release of cornerback Ras-I Dowling, a second-round pick in 2011.

Somehow I don't think NFL.com would have written that if the Bills would have done the same thing...

Drafting well in the bottom 5 every year is not the same as drafting well in the top 12 every year. They've made mistakes but they've done well enough to keep winning.

Unless they end up as lucky as the Colts did and have a franchise QB fall into their laps when Brady does retire.

Most teams when they lose the best QB their franchise has ever had go over the cliff.

Hell, look at the Bills we're in a freefall abyss since Kelly left.

slightly off the topic, but even though they obviously didn't keep him, the colts also drafted freaking Elway.

Elway '83
Manning: '98
Luck: '12
not too shabby.

What's killed the Bills IMHO is we haven't hit rock bottom of late as Dareus is the highest pick we've had in quite some time. As let's face some of the best players in our franchise history are a result of the 1st overall pick (see Bruce Smith and OJ Simpson and even to a lesser extent Kelly as we traded for the chance to get him by trading former #1 overall Walt Patulski).

That coupled with failure to come away with impact guys later in the draft has killed. As outside of Stevie I can't think of a memorable day 2 or with the new draft day 3 impact player we've had in quite awhile. Perhaps Jay Riemersma?

Gilmore's injury makes him a bust after being touted as a shut down guy coming in to the season?

Gilmore has had one good season, and it was a good season for a rookie but lets not get ahead of ourselves here. He's not a bust but he's not finished developing either.

Weird. Byrd is a bust? Strange... thought he wanted top safety money.

Byrd wasn't a Nix draft pick and Nix absolutely botched his contract negotiation, so that's not really a win for him.

Aaron Williams looks at home in the safety position... Nah, bust and fodder.

LMAO. Aaron Williams moved to safety to salvage a career already down the tubes. Considering the guys we passed on to get him, that might be Nix's biggest miss yet.

EJ Manuel wasn't drafted in the first round, either.

EJ Manuel hasn't even taken a regular season snap.

Glenn, Hairston, Bradham, Carrington, Dareus... none of them are starting material.

Glenn's a great pick, Dareus his a lot of ground to make up. Hairston is a backup, Bradham is still very raw, and Carrington has blocked a few field goals.

Moats, Troup, Easley, Graham, Searcy, Brooks... no business being on an NFL roster let alone a role player.

What have any of these guys accomplished? Amusing that mere hours after you tout Troup as some kind of success, we cut him.

Glad we got rid of all those busts and losers.

The fact that you have to tout Moats, Easley, Troup, and Brooks to hype up Buffalo's draft record is hysterical.

Yes Buddy Nix should be given all the credit for this current team.

When we go 3-13, the homers will turn on the coaching staff.

We're on a Buffalo Bills themed message board...aren't we all homers?

We traded Tom Cousineau for the Kelly pick. Patulski just fizzled out after 5 years.

I also wouldn't use Bert Jones as an example of failure. Pretty good QB and would have been great had injuries not derailed his career.

Just a bit of trivia. Johnny Unitas was signed as a free agent after the Steelers let him go. So, historically the Colts have been OK in the QB department.

If ever the was a perfect example of how important the QB position is in today's NFL, the Pats are that team.

Their time is coming. I'm going to destroy Patriots fans when they stink again. Absolutely destroy.

i live in new england.

there was no such thing as a patriots "fan" before 2001.

the red sox...

THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF ORGANIZED SPORTS SWEET CARRRRRROOOOOOOOLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE OHHHHHHHHH OHHHHHHHHHHH OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OH MY GOD OH MY GOD COWBOY UP COWBOY UP YANKEES SUCK SWEET CAROLINE YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

are the best team in baseball right now and play in a half empty stadium every night.

the day brady retires, there will be no more bills/patriots rivalry. we might beat them for the next decade, but i assure you, they wont care.

THATS whats most frustrating about them being good.

its like, a double edged sword... patriots fans dont know enough about football to say anything but "pats are da best, welkah best receivah evah" and bills fans are so *****ing beaten down and pathetic that if beliceck signed that cripple from rutgers, there would be a 20 page thread on here with people lamenting our front office for not being "forward thinking" enough to get a player on wheels.

the reality of the situation is this:

pioli built a defensive monster with a good quarterback. by cheating (see: largest punishment in history of the league levied against new england) the patriots won 3 superbowls in 4 years. they were IMPOSSIBLE victories, and didnt pass the eye-test. of course they were phony. but, the league doesnt want to admit that their sport was/is "rigged", so evidence was destroyed, and it is completely verboten to bring up spygate on any sports network if they hope to retain rights to show nfl highlights.

10 years out, the patriots have one of the worst defenses in the league, no wideouts, havent won a championship with THE GREATEST QB EVER since spygate, and can barely win playoff games. due to the bills ineptitude, new england looks like world beaters twice a year when they play us, despite the fact that the bills could have won literally every game against the patriots for the past 3 years, were it not for us being the buffalo bills.

bottom line: pats are above average, bills suck.

I don't know how you can diss the Patriots drafts when the Bills have historically been terrible at drafting. The latest bombs have been Mike Williams and J.P Losman. The only times we drafted well was when Knox was coach and Polian was GM. Consequently, lowballing Knox and firing Polian were two of Ralph's biggest gaffes.

I don't think it matters if we draft well or not. Good players don't seem to want to play in Buffalo. They leave after their rookie contract. What makes me laugh is some fans always blame the FO when they go. The player holds all the cards. I f he wants to leave after his initial deal, there is little they can do to stop him.

Nobody wanted to leave the Billls during the Kelly/Levy years.

When the Bills start winning again, players will again want to play in Buffalo.

The fact you call OLD NEWS of Williams & Losman "the latest bombs" speaks to how well the Bills have drafted under Nix.

Sorry, post didn't take. Free agency was really just beginning and we did lose players. Wolford, Ballard, Talley, Conlan, Wright, Biscuit and young guys like Marvcus Patton. However, I agree that if we start fielding better teams we can attract better players.

The Patriot bashing is just dumb, they have smoked us regularly for the last 15 years. Belichick is one of the best at drafting players that fit his system. Buffalo changes coaches and systems every 3 years, hard to be good when you have NO continuity. People that are saying the Pats have no receivers will be all over Dobsons' jock after week 2.

Oh you're right sorry I crossed up Walt P and Cousineau. The Colts have had a strong history with the QB position heck they even drafted Chris Chandler in the 3rd Round.

We didn't lose those players until they lost their skills. And the Bills did not draft Biscuit, they traded for him & Biscuit has said that trade would never have happened if he did not want to come to Buffalo,

but the trade was made because he loved the idea of playing for the Bills.

The Pats* keep winning because Brady keeps playing & Belicheat keeps coaching.

NOT because of their drafting.

Their day in the Sun is going to end soon.
Don't forget the cheating!

I'm in my 50's and when I was younger, I visited my cousins in Framingham, Mass and went to a Pats game with Grogan at QB and they were pretty good. May have been 35,000 at the stadium and they were a distant 4th in that town behind the Sox, Celtics and Bruins in that order.

I know I could list more players from their 1960's, 1970's teams than most of their residents who are my age...since they couldn't have given a crap about the Patriots for their first 25 years of football.

They define BANDWAGON.. Strictly due to finding lightning in a bottle with Belecheat and Brady.

Ballard played 4 more years with the Seahawks still at a high level. Biscuit played on another SB team with Atlanta. I'll agree on Talley and Wright, but you're wrong saying all those players had lost their skills.

What good free agents did we sign after '95? Paup, Spielman, Ted Washington, Spikes, Milloy, Sam Adams and the jury is still out on Mario. Who else?

You named plenty. The point is when the Bills win again, players will want to be Bills again.
