View Full Version : Time of Possession problem

this is the stat that concerns me more than the penalties on offense.

We gave the Patriots over an ENTIRE quarter more with the football. And the Panthers got a 1/2 more quarter w/ the ball than we did. That's not good. It was an achilles heel during our '90's runs too.

Time of Possession:

Patriots - 37:43
Bills - 22:17

Panthers - 33:41
Bills - 26:19

This tells me our defense is probably better than we think, and our offense / no huddle game plan mindset won't work long term.

That's the nature of a high speed no huddle offense. As the offense gets better we'll score more points and TOP will mean little.

I disagree. Time of Possession always matters. In theory you'd think that'd work, but it doesn't play out that way. Maybe except for the 1999 Rams, but they didn't run a no-huddle offense. They're one of the few exceptions about not needing alot of time on offense to score, but they also had a solid defense.

We have to learn to have long sustained drives that eat up the clock. so when we need to do it in the 4th Q, we know how.

if we keep scoring on every possession, I don't think TOP matters because we could be running the ball when we're way ahead.

Marrone has said the Bills are not concerned with TOP.

The concerns are scoring points & winning the turnover battle according to Marrone.

we're currently last in the NFL. I think it's going to be an issue

the goal of the offense is to score points. Under Dick Jauron the goal was ball control without scoring.

So true.

I'm more concerned with amount of plays they are on the field. Against NE it was bad. Car only had 3 more plays than us. We are going to lose TOP every game when we are not huddling and the other team is.

How about offensive plays? You can't score from the huddle!

I agree with bondz, I think it's a concern. If you assume the TOP usually evens out to about 30 minutes a piece, we are already 10minutes over that. By week 6 our defense will have played almost an entire extra game at that pace.

They don't score on that last drive if the no-huddle wasn't such a big part of this offense.

The Defense can avoid that by getting the ball back for the offense.

Force the other team into 3 & out & get off the field.

So how do Brady, Bree's, Rogers, Manning always do it. No huddle / hurry up should be part of your offense, not the whole thing.

Because it's always a good idea to look at what other people do instead of trying something different.

actually Brady runs an up tempo offense.

trying something different and having the ball aren't mutually exclusive

I don't care about TOP but this stat is worrisome:
Plays against our defense/game 82.5
Offensive plays/game 67

That's a problem. Our opponents get 82.5 chances per game to score points while we only get 67. Thankfully we're 6th in yards per play so those extra chances haven't meant much.

but that's the time of possession issue right there.

NE is 3rd for offensive snaps / game
NO is 6th
GB 22nd
DEN 5th

3/4 of those teams get a lot of offensive snaps.

That's a nice thought, but they haven't been doing it. Our D has already faced 165 plays in two games. If that pace continues, we'd face over 1300 this season. Jax (the worst last year) only faced 1100. Can they hold up?

Your argument was "that's not what other teams do." I'm saying that's a bad argument.

if we get rid of our penalties, our D would be on the field less.

1993 Bills TOP ave 27:46

1992 Bills TOP ave 28:16

1991 Bills TOP ave 26:15

Fast pace means shorter TOP
