Officials will now have the authority to whistle the play dead if a player from the opposing team reaches the dot inside the nearest faceoff circle before a player from the offending team. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=684869&navid=nhl:topheads

I hate this rule. Why don't they just go with a stryrofoam puck and replace the sticks with pool noodles?

Maybe they should play without helmets and make goalies stop wearing masks..........

Decent move, but I wish they'd use the standard that major junior and colleges use-once the puck reaches the goal line on the non-offending team's end, it's called for icing. We've seen enough injuries resulting from chases of the puck to prevent an icing call.

This will also speed the game up a bit since we don't have to wait for a defenseman to skate all the way down the ice to touch a puck when it is clear that he will be there first

have no idea how i feel about this. on one hand the current touch system is still rife with errors as linemen aren't in the right position to see who touched it first.

but in a hybrid system, i'd hate to see them whistle it dead on what is shaping up to be a close race. then a couople of those calls, and essentiall no one tries. it's kids hockey at that point. the puck goes down and just gets whistled once it hits the boards.

on the flip side, i honestly don't recall that many times that a player actually beats the icing. i've definitely seen it happen, but it is below 50%. so it's not really changing that much but eliminating some injuries.

It's possible to go too far with safety and hurt the game- just look at what the NFL is doing.

And it's an arbitrary place to draw the line- sure, fly around on razor sharp skates on hard ice, run into each other at full speed, throw punches, and shoot a frozen piece of vulcanized rubber at each other at 100 mph. But don't race each other to the end of the rink. That's too dangerous.

Chasing a puck is so inconvenient, LOL.
