Pettine's Shell

Pettine is definitely an improvement over any D coordinator we have had in a while, however, he tends to go into a shell on critical third down plays. Opponents have been concerting 3rd and 14+ with regularity on his defense. Throughout the Jets game he was playing base nickel defense for almost the entire game and let Geno just sit back there and read.

On critical downs Pettine is playing very vanilla and we're getting our corners torched. Not too happy with Pettine's gameday performances.

I posted about this after the Ravens game. He likes to fake blitzes on 3rd and long, but then the linebackers can't drop deep enough to cover the sticks. I say either blitz them for real or drop them but the fake leaves you with the worst of both worlds.

given the state of the Bills secondary, I wished they wouldve 'sold-out' on the blitz more often ...on 3rd & long, it feels like 'death by 1,000 paper cuts'

Well what he's not understanding is that we don't have cover corners on the team. So sitting back in coverage while only sending 3 or 4 just leads to our CBs getting beat with all the extra time. We need to blitz to protect those corners. And when Gilmore and Byrd get back, blitz more.

Well what he's not understanding is that we don't have cover corners on the team. So sitting back in coverage while only sending 3 or 4 just leads to our CBs getting beat with all the extra time. We need to blitz to protect those corners. And when Gilmore and Byrd get back, blitz more.

I'm not a fan of big blitzing on every 3rd down. A few times a game, sure, but it's easy to stop when you know it's coming.

WTF do you want from Pettine? Blitz every down? Allow zero big plays? Allow zero first downs? Allow zero points?

It's hard to blame the DC when he's making chicken salad out of chicken poop.

Chicken Poop? He has one of the best front 7s in the NFL. He doesn't have to blitz on every 3rd down but watching them convert 3rd and 14+ almost every time is pretty annoying.

have you seen how many times our O put our D on the field? I don't care who you are , if your injury riddled D is on the field as often as ours is, you will get burned. It's because of our D that the games have been close.

it's be interesting to know how many of the points came later in games. they've been solid early.

last night 14 points were on the board without the defense. so all things being equal he is doing great.

additionally 3rd and long has been buffalo's achilles since superbowl 1 when ingram wandering through everyone.

I think its a little bit of give and take. The defense when getting beat on 3rd and long has had little help from the O in terms of sustained drives and letting them rest.

I noticed the Pettine fake blitz drop tactic like Illum noted as well. The LB's outside of Kiko just aren't athletic enough to make it happen and it opens up the seam route for good TE's or slot WR's.

I'd like to see some more zone blitzes, utilizing the safety with a LB drop. Hell maybe even drop Williams or Hughes and let Kiko come free. Just mix it up a little. Its a small critique but if we as fans are picking up on it you know opposing OC's are as well.

Not happy again with Pettine today. Our D has been getting killed all day on first down.
