With Vikings running back Michael Bennett apparently out until at least October with a foot injury, the team may have to rely on rookie Onterrio Smith.
The Vikings ranked Smith 30th overall on their draft board and consider him a steal as a fourth-round pick. Much like Bennett, Smith is an explosive back with excellent speed.
Smith does not have great size and is not the type of back who can handle a workload of 30 carries per game. But he has terrific upfield burst and a second gear in the open field, which makes him a threat in the Vikings' spread offense.
Quality practice time will help Smith learn the patience it takes to be successful as a crease-hitting running back in the team's scheme. ...
