New York City - The New York Jets announced Monday they have signed free safety Derek Pagel, the first of the team’s two fifth round selections. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Terry Bradway.

A 6-1, 210-pound native of Plainfield, Iowa, Pagel recorded 154 tackles, 14 passes defensed, five tackles for losses, five interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick in his collegiate career at the University of Iowa....

Fall begins Sunday when for the 36th consecutive season, the New York Jets will report to their Weeb Ewbank Hall Training Complex at Hofstra for the commencement of training camp.

The Jets begin practice on Monday, July 21, and wrap up their camp schedule on Friday, August 22. Herman Edwards' players start early because the Jets play five preseason games, including the league's first 2003 contest when they meet the defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tokyo, Japan on August 2. The defending AFC East Division champs will be out of the United States from July 29 until August 3, so camp will feature a brief hiatus. ...

J.P. Pelzman, of the Bergen Record, reports the New York Jets are believed to be looking to sign players to four-year contracts, rather than three-year deals. After being burned by the loss WR Laveranues Coles, a restricted free agent from their 2000 draft class, the Jets want their players signed for four years to avoid restricted free agency.

"He made 41 workouts this offseason," Jets general manager Terry Bradway said of Evans. "We stand behind him as a player and as a person."

J.P. Pelzman, of the Bergen Record, reports that neither New York Jets general manager Terry Bradway nor HC Herman Edwards would commit to who will be the opening-day starter when the Jets visit the Washington Redskins on September 4. The team signed veteran DT Chester McGlockton to help fill the void left by the suspended DT Josh Evans and unsigned first-round DT Dewayne Robertson. After being cut by Denver, McGlockton participated in a coaching internship in NFL Europe and has not been in an off-season program for nearly three months.

Their incumbent at defensive tackle is suspended indefinitely. The heir apparent isn't signed yet. And their newest signee won't be ready for the start of training camp.

You get the idea there's just a little uncertainty on the Jets' defensive line at the moment.

The team signed veteran defensive tackle Chester McGlockton on Tuesday to help fill the void left by the suspended Josh Evans and unsigned first-round draft pick Dewayne Robertson. Terms were not disclosed, but an Internet report said it's a one-year, $780,000 deal with a $25,000 signing bonus....

Just two months past his 30th birthday, running back Curtis Martin could easily rest on his Hall of Fame credentials and do things the same way he's been doing them over his eight NFL seasons.
Who could blame him after the kind of year he had in 2002 - rushing for 1,094 yards and seven touchdowns despite serious sprains to both ankles and a sprained knee. In fact, his 4.2-yard-per-carry average was tied for the second best of his career

Yet Martin believes he could have done so much more if not for the injuries. Watching game film from last season, Martin would see one of his runs - even a great one - and point out that he could have gained more. While the cuts and moves needed to advance further came quick to his mind, injuries made it impossible for his body to execute....

Yamada has signed a contract with the Buccaneers while Imoto has agreed to terms with the Jets. Dewayne Robertson's Atlanta-based agent is in town again, but the Jets' first-round defensive tackle still is unlikely to be in the neighborhood when players report to training camp at Hofstra University on Sunday.

"I know in the morning I'll sit down with the Jets,'' Hadley Engelhard said Thursday evening of his third trip north to talk with assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum. "There's nothing about any breakthrough or anything. I'm just coming here to be proactive and move things forward.''

The Jets would like to move forward from Day 1 with Robertson on board, since their 3-technique tackle position just won't resolve itself. Josh Evans probably will be suspended for at least half the season for violating the NFL's drug policy, and just-signed Chester McGlockton, in the 370-pound area, won't practice until he works himself into shape....

Despite a slow start to negotiations and a lack of urgency until the last few days, the New York Jets on Saturday evening reached a contract agreement in principle with first-round draft pick Dewayne Robertson, ESPN.com has learned.

Neither the length of the contract nor the financial terms were immediately available, but all of the major elements of the deal have been hammered out and there is just some fine-tuning needed on a few remaining elements. The fourth player selected overall in the April draft, the former University of Kentucky defensive tackle will sign the contract Sunday, barring any unexpected glitches....

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Forget the ginko biloba. Herman Edwards wants his short-term memory loss. In fact, he encourages everyone around him to look not back but ahead.

"Basically, we had a good off-season, and now it's a carryover from there to training camp," Edwards said recently. "Your circumstances never affect your vision. Our vision is, let's get off to a good start."

Many would dispute the characterization of the past five months as "good," but Edwards was referring more to on-field matters. And when he addresses his players tonight at the opening of his third training camp as Jets' coach, none of the recent off-field "circumstances" will be among his talking points....
