Dolphins | Moore to Sign Soon - from www.KFFL.com
        Wed, 16 Jul 2003 12:16:42 -0700

The Sun-Sentinel reports that a contract between the Miami Dolphins and second-round draft choice LB Eddie Moore is imminent, according to Moore's agent, Derek Spratley. "We are actually in the midst of getting (a contract) done," said Spratley, who added the delay is having more to do with the salary cap than the terms of the deal. "I don't see any problem having a deal done before the end of the weekend. It is just a process that we are working on. There are just some things with cap issues and stuff, and we just have to be creative with it."

The Sun-Sentinel reports that Miami Dolphins third-round draft choice OT Wade Smith will sign before training camp opens July 24, according to his agent, Brian Parker. "I don't foresee there being any roadblocks," Parker said, "and that's not just boilerplate, that's the truth."

Dolphins' second-round pick gets closer to deal

DAVIE -- The agent for linebacker Eddie Moore, the Dolphins' second-round draft pick from Tennessee, says he hopes a contract can be worked out this week.

Derek Spratley, who represents Moore, received a proposal from the Dolphins last week and the two sides have had talks.

Only a handful of first- and second-round draft picks have reached agreements. Cornerback Bryan Scott, chosen six spots after Moore, signed a five-year, $3.165 million deal with Atlanta, including a $1.25 million signing bonus.

Camp clock running for 7 draft picks

With just over a week before players are to report to training camp, the Dolphins have signed two of their nine draft picks.

That should change by the end of the weekend, according to Derek Spratley, the agent for second-round pick Eddie Moore.

Spratley said a deal with the Dolphins is imminent, with the delay having more to do with the salary cap than the terms of the deal.

For Seau, it's all part of the culture

Dolphins linebacker embodies Samoan spirit for the game
On the rugby fields of Samoa, an island nation in the South Pacific, the pregame is a wondrous ritual called the Haka.

There are no fireworks, no cheerleaders, no rock band and no announcers booming the introductions over loudspeakers the size of a school bus. Not even a Frisbee dog.

There is only the war dance and chant, a ritual that even the national team does for its matches.

                  There is nothing like it.

Dwyer grad wins himself new chance

DAVIE -- The gold teeth shine from Johnny Thomas' mouth because of his "I can't believe I'm here" smile.

Next to him during this June quarterback school is Tim Bowens, the hulking Dolphins' Pro Bowl defensive tackle. Bowens was Thomas' favorite player, and while playing at Dwyer High School, Thomas would do his best Bowens' impersonations. They were so good, one rival coach thought he belonged in the same neighborhood as Vince Wilfork, the Santaluces graduate who projects to be a first-round draft choice out of Miami next spring.

But Thomas' path to the NFL is certainly different than the one Wilfork will take. There have not been national championship games and ESPN analysts and sold-out crowds.

Chambers: Give me the ball, please

DAVIE -- He will not do the politicking that Keyshawn Johnson does, or be as demonstrative as Terrell Owens. But Chris Chambers wants the ball.

Really. He does. He'll just do it politely, which fits his personality.

"I want to give him a mean pill," wide receivers coach Robert Ford said.

Ford does not want the headache that comes with some big-time receivers, like when he had Michael Irvin in his ear in Dallas. But he wants Chambers to be more vocal, physical and demanding.

Chambers and McMichael yearn for larger roles in Miami offense

HOLLYWOOD ยท It is time for lunch. These guys are famished.

Randy McMichael, the 24-year-old tight end, has been seated for a couple of minutes when Chris Chambers, the 24-year-old receiver, grabs a menu. Each wears a visor in the dimly lighted Dave & Buster's dining room, but it's not as if they're hiding, moping, hoping to be left alone with their exasperation.

                        Not anymore, anyway.

It is Thursday, eight days before the start of Dolphins camp. More than six months have passed since we left two of the team's most promising pass-catchers in recent memory in a state of disbelief in the state of Massachusetts, each having had little chance to alter the outcome of a 27-24 loss and a lost season, each sentenced to months of wondering what happened and how to make the next time different.
