PITTSBURGH -- An affidavit with a police search warrant alleges that a priest supplied alcohol at a cookout attended by a University of Pittsburgh football player who hours later received fatal injuries in a fall at a church.

According to the affidavit, witnesses told police that Billy Gaines and four other Pitt players were at a cookout at which liquor was supplied by the Rev. Henry Krawczyk. The cookout began sometime June 17 and Gaines fell at about 2:30 a.m. June 18.

Gaines, a 19-year-old wide receiver from Ijamsville, Md., died about 20 hours after he suffered head and spinal injuries from a 25-foot fall at St. Anne Catholic Church, which was part of Krawczyk's parish.

An autopsy showed Gaines' blood-alcohol content was 0.16 percent, higher than the state's legal limit of 0.1 percent for driving.

At the time, all of the players were younger than 21, police said. Krawczyk resigned July 3 as pastor of St. Maximilian Kolbe parish in Homestead, a suburb just east of Pittsburgh.
