MOSCOW -- New York Rangers forward Roman Lyashenko was buried in his Russian homeland Saturday, less than a week after he was found dead in a Turkish hotel room.

Lyashenko's body was found hanging Sunday by a belt in the bathroom at a beach resort in Antalya, a southern Mediterranean province. A suicide note, in which the 24-year-old hockey star apologized for killing himself, was also found, according to a Turkish paramilitary police officer spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Lyashenko had been vacationing with his mother and sister.

Players and trainers from the Lokomotiv hockey team attended the funeral service at a cemetery in Yaroslavl, about 150 miles northeast of Moscow, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Lyashenko played regularly with the Dallas Stars his first two seasons in the NHL, then was traded to the New York Rangers in the 2001-02 season.

Last season, he played two games with New York, spending the year with Hartford for the American Hockey League, where he had 23 goals and 35 assists.
