Jimmy Johnson was asked about building a winning team

Jimmy was on the radio this morning and he was asked about defenses and lines and pass rushing... He said you can have a solid Dline but you need a pass rusher or rushers. Someone that can be elusive and get up field ... No duh.

What he said next was a response to a question about importance. He said

(paraphrase) If I were building a team I would get a QB then another QB since the NFL is now a QB league first like never before. I would lock down that position THEN get a pass rusher...

My question is this. What do you think of this and what would be your order of importance in say the first 4 priorities on a team?

I like Jimmy's QB QB DE importance. I would follow that with Corner then RB then oline

QB TE WR DE/OLB depending on scheme.

QB is obviously first and foremost.

TE because you can create matchup nightmares for the opposition. See N.O. N.E. ATL

WR because you need weaponS for the QB to throw to

DE/OLB because you need someone to get after the oppositions QB once in a while.

Defense. I'd make sure I had one of the top Defenses in football, and great running backs.

      I'd say Defense>Offensive Line>Running Backs>Quarterback

**** him... That team functioned because of great line backing and offensive line play... and yes Charles Haley was badass.

He was talking about if he were doing it TODAY... not back when he had a gazzillion picks and no free agency

I am so sick of this QB driven league meme.

running the ball down someone's throat doesn't work anymore again... why?

If it did Minnesota would be the top team in football. Are they?

Show me the last Super Bowl winner that used that theory.
"'Clean up your room.', 'Stand up straight.', 'Pick up your feet.', 'Take it like a man.', 'Be nice to your sister.', 'Don't mix beer and wine, ever.'. Oh yeah, 'Don't drive on the railroad track.'"

If you don't have a QB teams respect you're not going to run the ball down anyone's throat

Re: Jimmy Johnson was asked about building a winning team

i would want a QB and a line first. The RB/WR/TE can survive with agood line and an accurate QB who has time to deliver a pass. That makes it less likely that you need a manning running the offense. Then if you cna add one legit talent at RB/WR/TE, you are in good shape to be a good offense.

on Defense, i think the front 7 has to be stacked. i think if you have 2 legit LBs that can cover the sidelines, it lets you do whatever you really want and it takes a high level QB to read your fronts and know what you are doing at any given point. The Bills DB's are no names thus far and have performed ok with pressure. If you have a line worrying about kiko and a legit outside linebacker every play and you have to double team a Lineman or two, you should get pressure quickly.

i think the DB's can be scrubs from other teams at that point.

So for me, i think we spent last year getting offensive players. this draft should be LB/DL, LB heavy and weighted towards defense. and the FA focus should be on DB's (middle of the pack), a potential RB if you feel like fred is getting too old, and more OL and DE back ups.

                            How is that ignorant?

How about the Bills? We're always near the league leaders in rushing. Do we win?

QB, DE/OLB pass rusher, OT, WR, CB, TE

                              RB's are a dime a dozen.

Notice S isn't there ? That's why Byrd and his agent can go fleece someone else.
