You be the GM: Trade Deadline Edition

You're Bills GM Doug Whaley, you currently sit at 3-4, one game out of the last WC spot in the AFC. You're been decimated by injuries, have lost your starting QB for the near future and your best offensive playmaker is severely hobbled. Defensively you have your best players back (Gilmore, Byrd) and your $100 million dollar DE is playing like one finally. So are you buying, selling, or standing pat?

Do you make the move for a WR like Hakeem Nicks or Josh Gordon to find a #1 WR to take some pressure off Manuel/Lewis? Do you make a move for an OG and improve like that has been porous (Charles Johnson, David Diehl)? Do you consider moving a veteran like Kyle Williams should a good offer come around?

We all know what will likely happen, but what would you do if it was your call to make?

Since we're not winning this year I would only be looking to trade for players that could help me in the future. If the price was right then I would take Josh Gordon or other good young players under contract for a couple more years in a heartbeat.

I would look to unload a veteran or other player that isn't in your long term plans but only if the price was also right. I wouldn't be trading them just for the sake of it. If you knew you were releasing them after this year or not re-signing them then I would make a trade for the right price. It would need to be for something that can improve my team going forward and not for some late round draft pick.

So if Cleveland says we'll move you Gordon for two 3rds (14 and 15) do you make the deal?

How about just for a 2nd in 2014 draft?

Nicks isn't a Number 1 WR because if he was the Giants wouldn't be so quick to move him. That said he is probably better than every WR we have outside of Stevie. To me a bigger prize/value is Fred Davis, sure he's an UFA but if the Bills brass really liked him as they appeared to this offseason I give Washington a 5th or 6th rounder and then offer him a two year deal to play here. As I've never been a lover of Scott Chandler as a starting TE. I see him as good number 2/red zone specialist and nothing more. Davis can easily step in and start for this team and think make the most impact and cost the Bills the least to acquire. In terms of the O-line, it's not horrid but I'd love to shore up some depth but that's more of an offseason/draft need. I'd also consider shoring up a better pass rush by seeing what the Jags would want for Jason Babin but prefer giving up a pick in 2015 if give up a pick to help the O yet not sure we'd really do anything.

I'd definitely do it for two 3rd round picks. His attitude might be too risky for a 2nd round pick though. I'd still ponder it either way.

Nothing. Keep your picks and salary cap room. Build this thing methodically in the coming seasons.

                  Yep.

First of all, we aren't trading football cards, so it's gotta be something that could REALLY happen. I can't think of a position, let alone a specific available player, that would help this team this year, which is already half over.

Don't like trading away picks, and I don't see getting any offers worth trading our guys for. Unless some team desperate for a safety offered a 2nd for Byrd or something. I'd probably stand pat then.

Only move I'd make for the right price is Byrd. If I could get a vet OL and a 2nd round pick, I'd make that deal. Byrd is gone next year anyway so may as well take advantage of a playoff team that wants to win now and is in desperate need of a S. Any teams in that position?

Re: You be the GM: Trade Deadline Edition

I see if any team banged up at QB wants Matt Flynn. I'm also interested in Fred Davis for a 7th, 6th if he resigns. Lastly I am still listening to offers on Byrd.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
                        It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Hakeem Nicks is always injured, Josh Gordon's one more screw-up away from a year suspension, Fred Davis suffered the kiss of death injury (torn Achilles) last year, and no one will give the Bills a fair offer on Byrd because he becomes a free agent next year. Stand pat.

I disagree. Stevie & Woods are a good pair of receivers. You are not going to upgrade those two by trade. You are not going to get the next Calvin Johnson unless you draft him.

And Stevie has not been dropping the ball this year.
